Ellen Page wants an X-Men Kitty Pryde movie with Joss Whedon

September 10, 2013 by admin

Ellen Page (Juno, Inception) first appeared as the character Kitty Pryde way back in 2006’s X-Men: The Last Stand. She has reprised the role for next year’s X-Men: Days of Future Past. Now, in an interview with Vulture, Page has said she’d be open to making a standalone Kitty Pryde movie with Marvel supremo Joss Whedon (The Avengers, Much Ado About Nothing). Below is a brief extract of the article:

“Well, I’m available! [Laughs.] I love that. Kitty Pryde’s awesome. I’m super grateful to be the actress who’s gotten to be her, and you only desperately hope that the true fans who have a right to demand what they want and who have been passionate about these stories for a really long time, that you can pull it off for them. I would be so thrilled to play Kitty Pryde again. I really would.”

Whedon has frequently stated in the past that he’s a fan of the character, going so far to once call her the “mother” of arguably his most famous creation, Buffy the Vampire Slayer. Back in 2009, he revealed that the studio “don’t seem to think [a Kitty Pryde movie is] awesome. I don’t know why.”

Perhaps that’s because the film rights to the X-Men characters are owned by Fox. Years ago, before superhero movies were so lucrative, Marvel sold off the film rights of a lot of their main properties. That’s why Spider-Man, the Fantastic Four and the X-Men haven’t yet appeared in Marvel’s movieverse, and their output so far has showcased essentially B- and C-List superheroes (Iron Man, Thor, etc). As Whedon wanted to make a Kitty Pryde film, he’d presumably have to jump studios.

Until then, though, or if Fox ever let the rights lapse and return to Marvel, we can look forward to the next X-Men film.

X-Men: Days of Future Past is set for release on May 23rd 2014 with a cast that also includes X-veterans Patrick Stewart (Professor X), Ian McKellen (Magneto), James McAvoy (Young Professor X), Michael Fassbender (Young Magneto), Jennifer Lawrence (Mystique), Nicholas Hoult (Beast), Lucas Till (Havok), Halle Berry (Storm), Anna Paquin (Rogue), Ellen Page (Kitty Pryde), Shawn Ashmore (Iceman) and Daniel Cudmore (Colossus) in addition to franchise newcomers Evan Peters (American Horror Story) as Quicksilver, Booboo Stewart (The Twilight Saga: Eclipse) as Warpath, Omar Sy (The Intouchables) as Bishop, Fan Binbing (Iron Man 3) as Blink, Adam Canto (The Following) as Sunspot and Peter Dinklage (Game of Thrones) as Bolivar Trask.
