Henry Cavill wants to flesh out his Superman as a true symbol of hope

November 23, 2021 by Matt Rodgers

While John Krasinski has just been cast as the voice of Superman in the forthcoming DC animated movie League of Super-Pets, the current live-action incumbent, Henry Cavill, has been speaking about his journey as Kal-El, and what he still hopes to explore as the Man of Steel in the future.

Speaking with GQ about his most iconic characters, Cavill was enthusiastic about his tenure as the The Last Son of Krypton, while also indicating that his time in tights might not be over just yet. Cavill said “I was very keen on really fleshing out Superman’s early stages of his journey first. We had Man of Steel, and then we went quite a bit darker with Batman v Superman“.

The Witcher star then continued on a thread which hinted at the sequel plans for Zack Snyder’s Justice League, which would have seen Superman infected by Darkseid’s Anti-Life Equation and essentially become the bad guy that was teased in the future war at the end of The Snyder Cut.

Cavill said “If he were to succumb to the Anti-Life Equation and become bad Superman, I really wanted to make sure we saw the hero Superman, and we saw the true symbol of hope, the beacon of light, before we went down the path of darkness and then redemption.” And here’s the most exciting soundbite of all, as Cavill punctuated the Superman chat with a smile and  “it’s still something I’m very keen to flesh out”.

While Batfleck is getting his farewell in Andy Muschietti’s The Flash, Jason Momoa is currently up to his waist in water filming Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom, and Gal Gadot is waiting for Patty Jenkins to sort our her schedule before Wonder Woman 3, it seems that despite obviously being keen to continue as DC’s finest, once again Cavill is left in The Phantom Zone when it comes to the status of his Supes.
