J.J. Abrams says the Star Wars: Episode IX screenplay is finished

February 22, 2018 by Samuel Brace

The screenplay for Star Wars: Episode IX is complete according to director J.J. Abrams.

Star Wars: The Last Jedi may still be fresh in the memory and Lucasfilm’s second anthology movie Solo: A Star Wars Story only three months away, but there is still great anticipation regarding the final film in the sequel trilogy.

While any official look at the film is still a long way away (the film won’t be released until December 2019), J.J. Abrams, who is returning to the director’s chair after helming The Force Awakens, has revealed a slither of information regarding the film’s progress.

Speaking on The Late Show with Stephen Colbert, Abrams said: “We have a script, which is a big deal for me. It starts shooting end of July … Sometimes having the script in advance is something I haven’t always been lucky enough to have … But I’m writing this with Chris Terrio, who’s a genius, and I’m having a great time.”

Abrams of course came in to replace Colin Trevorrow after the Jurassic World director was let go by Lucasfilm. It’s unclear how much of Trevorrow’s screenplay will impact the Abrams and Terrio draft.
