Josh Trank quit the Star Wars Boba Fett movie because he knew he was going to be fired if he didn’t

May 8, 2020 by Gary Collinson

Not long after Disney’s acquisition of Lucasfilm from George Lucas, the Mouse House announced that it would be expanding the Star Wars universe beyond the main saga films with a series of ‘Anthology’ movies.

Lucasfilm turned to two up-and-coming filmmakers to launch these spinoffs, with Monsters and Godzilla director Gareth Edwards boarding what became Rogue One: A Star Wars Story and Chronicle helmer Josh Trank taking charge of a Boba Fett standalone movie. And while Edwards encountered some problems on Rogue One, with Lucasfilm bringing in Tony Gilroy to oversee extensive reshoots on the 2016, Trank never actually made it as far as production on Boba Fett: A Star Wars Story.

After being absent from the ‘Gareth Edwards and Josh Trank’ panel at Star Wars Celebration 2015 amid rumours about his “erratic” behaviour on the set of 20th Century Fox’s Fantastic Four reboot it was soon announced that Trank was gone from the Boba Fett movie – the assumption being that Disney and Lucasfilm had swung the axe.

Well, it seems that isn’t quite the case, as Trank has revealed to Polygon during a promotional interview for his new movie Capone that he wasn’t actually fired from the Boba Fett film – although he knew he was going to be, and so made the decision himself to quit.

“I quit because I knew I was going to be fired if I didn’t quit,” said Trank, who added that he hadn’t wanted to discuss the situation as he expected to to blow over. “But I was shocked, it just hasn’t blown over. People get so excited to raise their pitchforks. I knew that this was going to be questioned and it was going to come under scepticism as to why I left Star Wars, and it was hard.”

Logan helmer James Mangold succeeded Trank on the Boba Fett project for a brief period before Lucasfilm decided to pull the plug completely in the wake of the disappointing box office returns for Solo: A Star Wars Story, opting instead to move ahead with the Disney+ series The Mandalorian.
