UPDATE: Jurassic World scores second-biggest domestic opening of all time

June 14, 2015 by Scott J. Davis

UPDATE: It’s being reported that Jurassic World has pulled in an estimated $204.6 million on its first domestic weekend, which would give it the second-biggest debut of all time behind The Avengers’ $207.4 million debut in May 2012. Original story follows…

As quick and ferocious as a T-rex, Universal Pictures Jurassic World is smashing box-office records across the globe, and word from across the Pond has the new venture into the world of dinosaurs on course to have an even bigger opening weekend than many had anticipated.

After grossing a staggering $83 million on its opening day on Friday, industry insiders have got their calculators and abacuses at the ready as all signs are pointing towards a staggering domestic opening weekend of $200 million for the fourth film in the dino-franchise. If it succeeds in crossing the new “holy grail” of box office openings, Jurassic World would have the second-highest grossing weekend of all time, just behind the champ The Avengers, which is the current top dog with $207.4 million.

What has helped the film edge close to the total is that the film’s Saturday gross is almost exactly where industry experts expected, with a drop of just 20% at $66.8 million. Furthermore, predictions have the film’s Sunday gross dropping only a further 22%, which would push it over the $200 million line. Low end predictions have the weekend closing at $181 million, but that would mean a drop of over 50% which isn’t very likely.

We will update the news on the opening weekend later today when the final estimates are unveiled.

Jurassic World, starring Chris Pratt, Bryce Dallas Howard and many, many dinosaurs, is out now in the UK and US. Read our reviews here and here. Listen to the Flickering Myth Podcast review of Jurassic World using the player below:
