Star Wars’ Kelly Marie Tran would consider Rose Tico return for Disney+ series

October 12, 2020 by Gary Collinson

While the likes of Daisy Ridley, John Boyega and Oscar Isaac have all distanced themselves from any potential Star Wars return following the conclusion of the Skywalker Saga, their Sequel Trilogy co-star Kelly Marie Tran has admitted that she’d consider reprising the role of Rose Tico, if the right project came along.

Tran made her debut as Rose in Star Wars: The Last Jedi, but the actress found herself coming in for unwarranted criticism and abuse from certain “fans” of the franchise, so much so that she was forced to quit social media to escape the harassment. After being sidelined Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker, outrage then shifted to Lucasfilm and director J.J. Abrams, who were accused of pandering to the online bullies by drastically reducing her role in Episode IX.

Despite this, it seems that Tran hasn’t closed the door on returning to the franchise, with Collider asking the actress for her thoughts on comments made by director John M. Chu (Crazy Rich Asians), who expressed interest in developing a Rose Tico series for Disney+.

“He’s so cool,” said Tran. “I don’t know. I honestly don’t know. It’s so strange. I had so much fun being in that world but I feel like the pieces would have to fall into a perfect little puzzle and everything would have to feel like it’s the right time and the right moment and the right story, like with any other project. But I don’t know.”

Given that Disney and Lucasfilm seem to be focussing on the Original Trilogy-era (or thereabouts) with its current Disney+ projects (The Mandalorian, Cassian Andor and Obi-Wan Kenobi), a Rose Tico return seems unlikely at present, at least outside of books and comics. However, be sure to let us know if you’d like to see Rose’s story explored further with a live-action series…
