Kevin Feige on digitally de-aging Samuel L. Jackson and Clark Gregg for Captain Marvel

July 7, 2018 by Amie Cranswick

Marvel Studios is set to take a trip back to the early 90s for the next instalment of the Marvel Cinematic Universe as Brie Larson’s Carol Danvers makes her big screen debut in next year’s Captain Marvel.

The film will feature a number of familiar – albeit younger – faces from the MCU, including S.H.I.E.L.D.’s Nick Fury (Samuel L. Jackson) and Phil Coulson (Clark Gregg), both of whom are being digitally de-aged for the movie – something Marvel Studios chief Kevin Feige has discussed in a recent interview with SlashFilm.

“I think having the option [to digitally de-age actors] is pretty amazing,” said Feige. “And I think having the technology and even without spoiling anything, Sam Jackson is shooting a movie for us right now that takes, where he’s entirely 25 years younger the whole movie [Captain Marvel].  So that’ll certainly be the one where it’s a character for the whole movie, as opposed to a glimpse at a certain period of time.  It’s the whole movie.  So it’s possible, assuming that works.  It’s possible. It’s very good when you are starting by the way with somebody like Michelle Pfeiffer or Michael Douglas or for that matter Sam Jackson or Clark Gregg.”

While the technique of de-aging actors has been met with mixed results, Marvel’s efforts – which include Michael Douglas in Ant-Man, Douglas and Michelle Pfeiffer in Ant-Man and the Wasp, Robert Downey Jr. in Captain America: Civil War and Kurt Russell in Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 – have certainly been among the better attempts, although they have always been used sparingly. How effective it will be for an entire movie remains to be seen, but we’ll find out in March…

The story follows Carol Danvers as she becomes one of the universe’s most powerful heroes when Earth is caught in the middle of a galactic war between two alien races. Set in the 1990s, “Captain Marvel” is an all-new adventure from a previously unseen period in the history of the Marvel Cinematic Universe.

Captain Marvel is being directed by Anna Boden and Ryan Fleck (Mississippi Grind) and sees Brie Larson (Kong: Skull Island) leading the cast as Carol Danvers alongside Samuel L. Jackson (The Avengers), Ben Mendelsohn (Rogue One: A Star Wars Story), Djimon Hounsou (Guardians of the Galaxy), Lee Pace (Guardians of the Galaxy), Lashana Lynch (Fast Girls), Gemma Chan (Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them), Algenis Perez Soto (Sambá), Rune Temte (Eddie The Eagle), McKenna Grace (I, Tonya), Annette Bening (American Beauty), McKenna Grace (Gifted), Ana Ayora (The Big Wedding), Vik Sahay (Chuck), Kenneth Mitchell (Star Trek: Discovery),  Clark Gregg (The Avengers) and Jude Law (Fantastic Beasts: The Crimes of Grindelwald).
