Mad Max: Fury Road prequel rumoured to be in pre-production in Australia

September 18, 2016 by Gary Collinson

In the build up to the release of Mad Max: Fury Road, director George Miller revealed that he was developing a further two instalments of the post-apocalyptic action franchise, and would be looking to move ahead with the next, Mad Max: The Wasteland, as soon as possible.

Since then, we’ve heard little in the way of movement with regards to the next film, but if – and this is a MAJOR if – a report from Australia’s The Herald Sun is to be believed, pre-production is now underway on a Fury Road prequel at New South Wales’ Broken Hill Studios, and shooting could start before the end of the year.

The report goes on to state that both Tom Hardy and Charlize Theron are slated to return, and the script will focus on the backstory of Theron’s character, Furiosa.

Looking at the report, it’s difficult to believe that Warner Bros. could get Miller, Hardy and Theron signed on, and begin prepping for production in just a few shorts months, without any of the major trades getting wind of his plans. It also conflicts with previous comments from Miller that Furiosa won’t feature in future Mad Max movies, and that he’d like to tackle a smaller film before returning to the wasteland.

In other words, this is probably nothing more than a tabloid fabrication…
