Mark Wahlberg and Peter Berg’s Boston Marathon bombing movie Patriots Day gets a first trailer

October 5, 2016 by Justin Cook

Coming off of the slightly disappointing opening weekend results for Deepwater Horizon, CBS Films has released the first trailer for Mark Wahlberg and Peter Berg’s second collaboration of the year, Patriots Day. Much like Deepwater Horizon, Patriots Day is based on fairly recent true events, in this case, the 2013 Boston Marathon bombing that killed three people and injured over 250. Mark Wahlberg plays Boston cop Sgt. Tommy Saunders in the trailer below…

Oddly enough, the trailer begins almost exactly how the official Deepwater Horizon trailer begins, with Wahlberg’s character surrounded by his loving wife before leaving for work in the morning. Other than little similarities here and there, Horizon and Patriots Day most likely won’t have a lot in common, especially because the former was more of a disaster movie than anything else, and the latter deals largely with the aftermath of the highly-publicized bombing and the city’s reaction.

Patriots Day marks the third time Berg has directed Wahlberg in a true-story movie, the first of which being Lone Survivor, based on the unsuccessful Operation Red Wings.

In the aftermath of an unspeakable attack, Police Sergeant Tommy Saunders (Mark Wahlberg) joins courageous survivors, first responders and investigators in a race against the clock to hunt down the bombers before they strike again. Weaving together the stories of Special Agent Richard DesLauriers (Kevin Bacon), Police Commissioner Ed Davis (John Goodman), Sergeant Jeffrey Pugliese (J.K. Simmons) and nurse Carol Saunders (Michelle Monaghan) this visceral and unflinching chronicle captures the suspense of one of the most sophisticated manhunts in law enforcement history and celebrates the strength of the people of Boston.

Berg has recruited a cast for Patriots Day that includes Michelle Monaghan, J.K. Simmons, John Goodman, Kevin Bacon, Melissa Benoist, Michael Beach, Rachel Brosnahan and Alex Wolff. In the United States, the film will have a limited-release Oscar-qualifying theatrical run in December before going wide on January 13th; in the UK, it will debut on January 27th.
