Marvel’s What If…? animated series confirmed to premiere on Disney+ in 2021

March 12, 2020 by Ricky Church

Variety has revealed Marvel’s What If…?, Marvel Studios’ first animated project for Disney+, will premiere on the streaming service next year as the studio has hired the Quebec City-based animation studio Squeeze to produce five episodes of the series.

Much like the Marvel comic of the same name, What If…? will take pivotal moments from the Marvel Cinematic Universe and show how things might have happened differently if history were altered. Of the 10-episode first season, three episodes that have been revealed are What If Peggy Carter Took the Super-Soldier Serum?, What If Bucky Barnes Fought Zombie Captain America? and What If T’Challa Was Star-Lord?.

“Marvel was looking for a world-class animation studio to come up with a fresh and unique style that would be in keeping with their brand essence,” said Squeeze CEO and co-founder Denis Doré. “We really clicked, right from our initial talks in Los Angeles last year, and they loved our proposal. I’m thrilled that our artists’ creativity and talent resonated so strongly in Hollywood.”

Marvel Studios’ Kevin Fiege announced a few months ago not only has What If…? been renewed for a second season, but they are already developing the new episodes for season two.

Marvel’s What If…? is set to launch in 2021, and sees Jeffrey Wright (Westworld) voicing The Watcher alongside a who’s who of MCU stars including Michael B. Jordan as Killmonger, Sebastian Stan as Bucky Barnes, Josh Brolin as Thanos, Mark Ruffalo as Bruce Banner/The Hulk, Tom Hiddleston as Loki, Samuel L. Jackson as Nick Fury, Chris Hemsworth as Thor, Hayley Atwell as Agent Peggy Carter, Chadwick Boseman as Black Panther, Karen Gillan as Nebula, Jeremy Renner as Hawkeye, Paul Rudd as Ant-Man, Michael Douglas as Hank Pym, Neal McDonough as Dum Dum Dugan, Dominic Cooper as Howard Stark, Sean Gunn as Kraglin, Natalie Portman as Jane Foster, Taika Waititi as Korg, Toby Jones as Arnim Zola, Djimon Hounsou as Korath, Jeff Goldblum as Grandmaster, and Michael Rooker as Yondu.
