Michael Giacchino to direct Marvel’s Werewolf By Night

March 12, 2022 by Gary Collinson

Fresh from scoring The Batman, it seems that Michael Giacchino is swapping the recording studio for the director’s chair on his next project, with The Wrap reporting that the Oscar-winning composer is set to direct Marvel Studios’ upcoming Disney+ Halloween special Werewolf By Night.

Giacchino already has a well-established relationship with Marvel, having scored Doctor Strange, the Spider-Man: Homecoming trilogy and the upcoming Thor: Love and Thunder, as well as the studio’s opening fanfare. He’s previously directed the 2018 short film Monster Challenge along with an episode of Star Trek: Short Treks, but Werewolf By Night is being described as his feature directorial debut (it’s yet to be confirmed however whether we can expect a feature-length running time for this special, or The Guardians of the Galaxy Holiday Special).

Golden Globe winner Gael García Bernal is leading the cast of Werewolf By Night, which is based on the Marvel comic of the same name and has been the alter-ego of two different characters in Jack Russell and Jake Gomez. Laura Donnelly (The Nevers) is on board as the female lead, potentially in the role of Nina Price, a vampire-werewolf hybrid also known as Vampire By Night.

Werewolf By Night will lean into the supernatural side of the Marvel universe, which the studio is looking to explore with the upcoming Moon Knight series, as well as the Blade movie. It’s been rumoured that Werewolf By Night could appear in the Oscar Isaac-led Disney+ series (which would be fitting given that Moon Knight actually made his debut in 1975’s Werewolf by Night #32), while there’s also been chatter lately that Mahershala Ali’s Blade may feature in the Halloween Special ahead of his own solo movie. With filming on Werewolf By Night due to get underway this month, hopefully we’ll have some official news soon.
