Minions: The Rise of Gru and Sing 2 get new 2021 dates

April 2, 2020 by Ricky Church

After being delayed a couple weeks ago, Universal and Illumination have now given a new release date for Minions: The Rise of Gru, the sequel to the Despicable Me spin-off, while also pushing the release of its musical animation sequel Sing 2.

Minions: The Rise of Gru was set for a July 3rd, 2020 date before its delay, but now it has been given a release date of July 2nd, 2021. The film follows the Minions and their meeting a young Gru, once again played by Steve Carrell, as he dreams of becoming the world’s most famous supervillain.

However, the date Minions 2 now occupies was originally set for Sing 2, the sequel to the animated musical comedy which starred Matthew McConaughey, Taron Egerton and Reese Witherspoon. The film has now been pushed back to the holiday season of next year with a release of December 22nd, 2021 – a date initially earmarked for Universal’s Wicked adaptation, which is now undated.

In the heart of the 1970s, amid a flurry of feathered hair and flared jeans, Gru (Oscar® nominee Steve Carell) is growing up in the suburbs. A fanboy of a supervillain supergroup known as the Vicious 6, Gru hatches a plan to become evil enough to join them. Luckily, he gets some mayhem-making backup from his loyal followers, the Minions. Together, Kevin, Stuart, Bob, and Otto—a new Minion sporting braces and a desperate need to please—deploy their skills as they and Gru build their first lair, experiment with their first weapons and pull off their first missions.

When the Vicious 6 oust their leader, legendary fighter Wild Knuckles (Oscar® winner Alan Arkin), Gru interviews to become their newest member. It doesn’t go well (to say the least), and only gets worse after Gru outsmarts them and suddenly finds himself the mortal enemy of the apex of evil. On the run, Gru will turn to an unlikely source for guidance, Wild Knuckles himself, and discover that even bad guys need a little help from their friends.

Minions: The Rise of Gru features the voice talents of Steve Carell, Taraji P. Henson, Michelle Yeoh, RZA, Jean-Claude Van Damme, Lucy Lawless, Dolph Lundgren, Danny Trejo, Russell Brand, Julie Andrews and Alan Arkin.
