Netflix sets sail on sequel to animated hit The Sea Beast

January 7, 2023 by Matt Rodgers

Following the news that The Sea Beast has become the most-viewed animated movie in Netflix’s history, the streaming giants have announced that they’re setting sail on a sequel with director Chris Williams.

Having departed The Mouse House following success with Disney’s Big Hero 6 and Moana, The Hollywood Reporter reveal that Williams has now signed a deal with Netflix that will see him create a follow-up to The Sea Beast (read our ★★★★ review here), as-well-as another project described simply as “an original fantasy”.

The Sea Beast 2 is in the very early stages of development but the report suggests that the sequel that will bring back monster hunter Jacob Holland and his now adopted daughter, Maisie Brumble.

Competition is stiff when it comes to animated content on the Netflix menu page, with Cartoon Saloon’s My Father’s Dragon and Guillermo Del Toro’s stupendous Pinocchio released in the same year, so the fact that The Sea Beast has topped the lot, with the second-longest Top 10 tenure for a Netflix film launched in 2022, is impressive indeed.

In an era when terrifying beasts roamed the seas, monster hunters were celebrated heroes – and none were more beloved than the great Jacob Holland. But when young Maisie Brumble stows away on his fabled ship, he’s saddled with an unexpected ally. Together they embark on an epic journey into uncharted waters and make history. From Academy Award winning filmmaker Chris Williams (Moana, Big Hero Six, Bolt), The Sea Beast takes us to where the map ends, and the true adventure begins.

The Sea Beast is currently streaming on Netflix.
