Olivia Wilde to direct a Marvel movie for Sony, Spider-Woman rumoured

August 20, 2020 by EJ Moreno

Actress-turned-Booksmart director Olivia Wilde is set to jump from high school textbooks to the pages of comics books, as Deadline reports Wilde has signed on to direct a Marvel movie for Sony Pictures.

Sources close to Deadline report that Wilde recently closed a deal to helm a secret Marvel film, which is said to center around a female character in the Sony Pictures Universe of Marvel Characters. While Sony has no confirmed anything at this time, reports say the film will be a Spider-Woman movie – something that Wilde herself has teased on Instagram.

Booksmart’s Katie Silberman will pen the film, with long-time Spidey producer Amy Pascal returning to oversee the project. Wilde and Silberman are currently reuniting on their next film Don’t Worry Darling, which features a cast that includes Florence Pugh (Black Widow), Shia LaBeouf (The Tax Collector), Chris Pine (Wonder Woman 1984) and Dakota Johnson (Suspiria).

The character of Spider-Woman has deep roots in the comics, with many including Gwen Stacy, Mary Jane Watson, and most famously Jessica Drew taking on the role. As a member of Sony’s pool of Spider-Verse characters to use, this is one of several female-led projects from the studio as they are also reportedly working on a Madame Web film and a Jackpot movie.
