Peter Jackson returning for Andy Serkis’ The Lord of the Rings: The Hunt for Gollum, set for 2026

May 9, 2024 by EJ Moreno

Warner Bros. wants more Lord of the Rings and is bringing back one of the masters of Middle-earth as Variety reports that Andy Serkis will star and direct The Lord of the Rings: The Hunt for Gollum.

Filmmaker Peter Jackson and his writing partners Fran Walsh and Philippa Boyens are producing the new Lords of the Rings movie and will reportedly “be involved every step of the way.”

During an earnings call this week, David Zaslav revealed the news. While details are limited, the exec claims the project is in the early stages of script development and will “explore storylines yet to be told.”

He adds, “Lord of the Rings is one of history’s most successful and revered franchises and presents a significant opportunity for theatrical business.”

If you recall, in 2023, Mike De Luca and Pam Abdy brokered a deal to make multiple films based on the beloved J. R. R. Tolkien books. Per the reports, these new Lord of the Rings movies will be developed through New Line Cinema.

Peter Jackson’s original Lord of the Rings trilogy was a massive success, grossing nearly $3 billion worldwide. He’d eventually tackle the prequel film series based on The Hobbit, which matched the gross of the original run.

The new Lord of the Rings movie is set for 2026. Meanwhile, WB also has the animated feature The Lord of the Rings: The War of the Rohirrim slated for release this December.
