PlayStation CEO claims Sony will never walk away from story-based games

June 5, 2019 by Liam Waddington

Jim Ryan, President and CEO of Sony’s PlayStation Division, has claimed that Sony is fully committed to the future of narrative-driven, story-based games.

In an interview with CNET, Ryan discussed a seamless transition into the next-generation console (PlayStation 5). However, during the interview, Ryan was asked about the future of live-service games such as Fallout 76, Anthem, and FIFA, and if these types of games have a future in comparison to narrative-based games that Sony is well-known for.

“We’ve never had greater success with our own narrative-driven, story-based games than we’re having right now. We feel good about that, and it’s certainly not a genre of gaming we’ll ever walk away from,” states Ryan. “Service games, when done well, will continue to be popular and grow in popularity. But only as the overall gaming ecosystem grows, and more people are playing more and more games longer and longer.”

This commitment is shown recently with the release of Horizon Zero Dawn, God of War, Spider-Man, and the recently released Days Gone. Additionally, this approach shows with no signs of slowing down as Death Stranding is set to arrive in November, and Naughty Dog’s The Last of Us Part II and Sucker Punch’s Ghost of Tsushima are hopefully set to arrive in 2020.

What are your thoughts on a narrative-driven, story-based future of games from Sony? I know I can’t wait to see what the publisher and their studios do next. Let us know your opinion in the comments below or tweet us @FMyth_Gaming…
