Rumour: Spider-Man 3 to feature Willem Dafoe’s Green Goblin, Thomas Haden Church’s Sandman, Dane DeHaan’s Green Goblin and Jake Gyllenhaal’s Mysterio

December 17, 2020 by Gary Collinson

With the as-yet-untitled Spider-Man 3 now in production and Sony and Marvel assembling a very intriguing cast which includes the return of Spider-Man 2’s Alfred Molina as Doctor Octopus and The Amazing Spider-Man 2’s Jamie Foxx as Electro, the rumour mill is going into overdrive on the wall-crawler’s next big screen outing.

Reports are circulating that Tobey Maguire and Andrew Garfield could be on board to return as their respective web-slingers alongside Tom Holland’s Peter Parker (not to mention Kirsten Dunst’s Mary Jane Watson and Emma Stone’s Gwen Stacy), and Charlie Cox’s Matt Murdock is said to be making the jump from Netflix’s Daredevil show to the MCU proper.

While we await some kind of official announcement from Marvel and/or Sony, we can now throw more rumoured names into the mix with The Illuminerdi claiming that Spider-Man star Willem Dafoe will be back as the Green Goblin along with Spider-Man 3’s Thomas Haden Church as Sandman. Meanwhile, reports on social media are suggesting that Jake Gyllenhaal’s Mysterio body double has also been spotted on the Atlanta, Georgia set.

Whether there’s truth to any of this, we shall have to wait and see, but if the reports are accurate then it seems we may just be one villain short of  a Multiverse version of the Sinister Six… Michael Keaton’s Vulture, perhaps? Or Topher Gra —

UPDATE: Why not throw in Dane DeHaan’s Harry Osborn/Green Goblin too? FandomWire has – and also claims that Jacob Batalon’s Ned Leeds will transform into Hobgoblin. Be sure to check back tomorrow when someone else “scoops” the inclusion of all three Aunt Mays and J.K. Simmons playing both versions of JJJ…

The Untitled Spider-Man Sequel is slated for release on December 17th 2021 and sees Jon Watts (Spider-Man: Homecoming, Spider-Man: Far From Home) directing Tom Holland (Spider-Man), Benedict Cumberbatch (Doctor Strange), Zendaya (MJ), Marisa Tomei (Aunt May), Jacob Batalon (Ned Leeds), and Tony Revolori (Flash Thompson).
