Sigourney Weaver in talks for Star Wars: The Mandalorian & Grogu

May 11, 2024 by Ricky Church

She battled xenomorphs. She served on the Protector. She fought with the Na’vi. And now legendary actress Sigourney Weaver may be heading to an area of space she’s never been before.

According to The Hollywood Reporter, the Alien icon may join the Star Wars film The Mandalorian & Grogu, spinning out of the hit Disney+ series The Mandalorian.

Weaver has begun talks with Lucasfilm to star in the film, which will be directed by Mandalorian co-creator Jon Favreau. As is typical with Lucasfilm, no details about who she will play or even the plot of the film has been revealed. Favreau, fellow Mandalorian creator and Lucasfilm CCO Dave Filoni and Lucasfilm head Kathleen Kennedy will produce the film.

The Mandalorian follows the Mandalorian bounty hunter Din Djarin as a young Force-sensitive child named Grogu, who is the same species as Yoda, comes into his care. Djarin faces off against remnants of the Empire who are hunting Grogu and becomes an important player in bringing Mandalorians across the galaxy out of their exile. It features Pedro Pascal, Katee Sackhoff, Giancarlo Esposito and the late Carl Weathers in its cast.

The series premiered in 2019 as the first Disney+ original and helped launch the streaming service. It was instantly a hit and Grogu, then nicknamed by audiences as Baby Yoda, became hugely popular in a short amount of time. The third season of The Mandalorian aired last year and while a fourth season hasn’t been officially announced as of yet, Favreau and Filoni have said the scripts for season four were completed before season three wrapped production. It is unknown, though, when season four may begin production or if it would come after The Mandalorian & Grogu.

There is also the possibility The Mandalorian & Grogu will tie together the other live-action Star Wars series set in this particular era as a grand finale of sorts. Ahsoka has been renewed for a second season, but it itself spun out of The Mandalorian and the third season even teased the series with the return of Grand Admiral Thrawn, one of the Empire’s most brilliant and deadly naval officers. With his return to the galaxy far, far away at the conclusion of Ahsoka, it could only spell trouble for Djarin, Grogu and the rest of the New Republic.

What do you think of Weaver’s casting? Are you excited to see her enter another beloved sci-fi franchise? Let us know on our social channels at @flickeringmyth…

The Mandalorian & Grogu has a release date of May 22nd, 2026.
