Simu Liu reveals Shang-Chi 2 is “definitely happening”

May 7, 2024 by EJ Moreno

Shang-Chi 2 is one of those Marvel Studios projects that seems lost in the shuffle, but the filmmakers behind it are committed to making it happen.

When director Destin Daniel Cretton stepped away from Avengers: The Kang Dynasty to focus on the sequel to Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings, fans were excited. But there has been radio silence since.

Now, Shang-Chi actor Simu Liu is giving fans a glimmer of hope. While appearing on The Tonight Show with Jimmy Fallon, Liu was asked about the development of Shang-Chi 2, and he started his long-winded answer.

Liu reveals, “This is where I use all the mental gymnastics that I can to answer this question. I will say this: It’s definitely happening. I should probably lead with that. People, whether it’s online or in person, ask me every single day and tell me every single day how much they enjoyed the first movie and how much of a moment it was.”

“And I think there’s just so much goodwill, and I’m so deeply appreciative of that,” he continued. “So please know that if you’ve ever sent me a message, if you’ve ever asked about a sequel or just approached or any which way, I really take it to heart, and I really, really appreciate it, I do.”

Rest assured, they all want it to happen. “I think I speak for myself and Destin [Daniel Cretton], our returning director, when I say that we’re so beyond excited to jump back in. We really are,” says Liu.

Destin Daniel Cretton’s 2021 film Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings earned over $400 million worldwide. Due to its pandemic release and the introduction of a new Marvel character, many felt the movie was prime for a sequel. Is it something you’d still like to see?
