Solo: A Star Wars Story writer says a sequel is a tough sell and the franchise’s Disney+ slate is packed

April 1, 2020 by Liam Waddington

Solo: A Star Wars Story may have been positively received from critics and audiences alike, but the Star Wars spin-off became the lowest-grossing entry in the entire franchise by earning just $392.9 million at the worldwide box office – meaning any chances of a sequel seemed unlikely.

Now, in a recent tweet by the film’s co-writer Jon Kasdan has revealed that, even with the recent release of the Disney+ streaming service, the chances of Lucasfilm pursuing a sequel remain low, saying it would be a tough pitch and the Star Wars slate is currently packed.

“Don’t think anyone’s pursuing a Solo sequel at the moment,” Kasdan shared on Twitter. “I think a feature, at this point, would be a tough sell & the [Disney+] Star Wars slate is really…pretty packed, all shows I’m lookin’ forward to. My work on [Indiana Jones] is long over but I’m excited there’s forward movement!”

Although The Skywalker Saga is finished, Lucasfilm has already confirmed the studio is currently working on the second season of The Mandalorian, a prequel series based on Rogue One: A Star Wars Story’s Cassian Andor, and an Obi-Wan Kenobi series set between Star Wars: Revenge of the Sith and Star Wars: A New Hope with Ewan McGregor returning to the role, while there are rumours about a potential Ahsoka Tano series starring Rosario Dawson. This doesn’t mean a sequel couldn’t happen eventually, but the studio is stacked with upcoming projects to seemingly consider moving forward with a follow-up to Solo: A Star Wars Story right now.

What do you make of Jon Kasdan’s comments? Do you think a sequel to Solo: A Star Wars Story could happen? Let us know in the comments below or tweet us @flickeringmyth…
