Submarine’s Craig Roberts lands lead role in Amazon’s Red Oaks pilot

June 25, 2014 by James Garcia

According to Deadline, Submarine star Craig Roberts has landed the lead role in the pilot for Red Oaks, a new Amazon Studios drama series from Steven Soderbergh and David Gordon Green. He will play a 20-year-old college student named David Myers, who gets hired as an assistant tennis pro at the “predominantly Jewish” Red Oaks country club. The series will take place in 1985, and shows David trying to “figure out what kind of life he wants to lead.”

Roberts’ breakout role was in Richard Ayoade’s 2010 film Submarine, which helped him land roles in Skins, The Double, Neighbors, and 22 Jump Street.

Not much else is known about the show, but with a star now in place we should begin hearing more updates in the coming weeks. Amazon Studios has been trying to make a name for themselves by producing direct-to-streaming shows to compete with companies like Netflix and Hulu. They had some success in 2013 with series like Alpha House and Betas, and have a host of new shows arriving later this year.

We’ll have more news on Red Oaks as it breaks.
