Suicide Squad’s David Ayer responds to #ReleaseTheAyerCut fan campaign

May 24, 2020 by Gary Collinson

After two and a half years of campaigning Warner Bros. to #ReleaseTheSnyderCut, Zack Snyder fans were overjoyed this week to hear that HBO Max will be bringing the filmmaker’s original cut of Justice League to the streaming service next year.

While we’ll finally get to see what Snyder had in store for the DC Extended Universe prior to his departure from the DC blockbuster, Justice League isn’t the only DCEU movie to have been taken out of the hands of its director and reworked by the studio – nor was it the first.

That ‘honour’ fell to David Ayer’s Suicide Squad, with Warner Bros. bringing in Trailer Park to chop up Ayer’s edit and oversee major changes to both the tone and the story of the supervillain team-up.

Within hours of the announcement of Zack Snyder’s Justice League, fans started turning their attention to Suicide Squad as #ReleaseTheAyerCut began trending on Twitter, and now Ayer himself has responded to the possibility of his original cut ever seeing the light of day:

” It is simply not my call or my IP,” said Ayer on Twitter. “I love WB – it’s always been my ‘home studio’ I fully respect and support the incredible path the DCU is taking under their stewardship. My cut of Suicide Squad may always be just a rumor. And that’s just fine.”

Unlike Justice League, which is reportedly costing between $20 million and $30 million to complete, Ayer’s version of Suicide Squad was essentially finished before being butchered by the studio, so one would have to assume it would be fairly straightforward to make the cut available should WB wish to do so.
