The Falcon and the Winter Soldier producer rules out Black Panther appearance for secret cameo

April 15, 2021 by Gary Collinson

It’s been known for a while now that this Friday’s fifth episode of Marvel’s The Falcon and the Winter Soldier is set to feature a major cameo – one which, according to showrunner Malcolm Spellman, would make viewers cry.

Given the inclusion of the Dora Milaje in the show, there’s been a lot of speculation recently that the late Chadwick Boseman may have shot another appearance as T’Challa prior to his passing last year. However, Marvel producer Nate Moore has ruled out a Black Panther appearance, telling Vanity Fair that:

“I would be honest if it was [Black Panther]. Chad’s passing is a whole life thing, and I loved the guy as much as the character. I think we have to be very careful and thoughtful about when he appears, because he meant so much to a lot of people as much as he meant to us. But yeah, we wouldn’t use that as a ‘Come next week; maybe you’ll see Panther!’ We wouldn’t, and he’s not.”

While an appearance in The Falcon and the Winter Soldier is off the cards, it’s interesting to note that Moore states “when he appears”  suggesting that Marvel may have some unused footage of Boseman’s T’Challa that could be incorporated into another project.

As Boseman had completed work on “numerous” episodes of the upcoming animated series Marvel’s What If…?, there’s also the possibility that Marvel could rework some of his recorded dialogue should they look to include a posthumous appearance in something like Black Panther II or Ryan Coogler’s Wakanda-based Disney+ series.

“Following the events of Avengers: Endgame, Sam Wilson/Falcon and Bucky Barnes/Winter Soldier team up in a global adventure that tests their abilities—and their patience.”

The Falcon and the Winter Soldier features a cast that includes MCU veterans Anthony Mackie (Falcon), Sebastian Stan (Winter Soldier), Emily VanCamp (Sharon Carter), Don Cheadle (War Machine), Daniel Bruhl (Zemo) and Georges St-Pierre (Batroc) alongside new additions Wyatt Russell (Overlord), Carl Lumbly (Doctor Sleep), Erin Kellyman (Solo: A Star Wars Story), Adepero Oduye (The Big Short), Desmond Chiam (Now Apocalypse), Miki Ishikawa (The Terror: Infamy) and Noah Mills (The Brave).
