The Fate of the Furious topples Star Wars: The Force Awakens for biggest worldwide opening of all time

April 16, 2017 by Gary Collinson

It was obvious that The Fate of the Furious was going to open big, with tracking suggesting $400 million plus for the eighth instalment of Universal’s blockbuster action franchise. However, it looks like the film is going to shatter that prediction, and is currently on course to surpass Star Wars: The Force Awakens for the biggest worldwide opening of all time.

Variety reports that The Fate of the Furious is on course to debut with $103.8 million domestically (the 38th biggest opening weekend), but it’s international gross is at a staggering $430.4 million, 36% higher than the previous record set by Jurassic World with $316.7 million. Leading the way is China, where the film grossed $65.6 million on Friday, the biggest single day of all time in that market.

Should these predictions hold, The Fate of the Furious would gross $534.2 million, breaking the current $529 million record set by The Force Awakens in December 2015.

UPDATE: The Fate of the Furious is now looking at a global haul of $532.5 million – made up of $100.2 million domestic and $432.2 million international (including a record in China of $192 million) – which puts it ahead of The Force Awakens and gives the Universal sequel the biggest worldwide opening of all time.

Now that Dom and Letty are on their honeymoon and Brian and Mia have retired from the game—and the rest of the crew has been exonerated—the globetrotting team has found a semblance of a normal life. But when a mysterious woman (Oscar winner Charlize Theron) seduces Dom into the world of crime he can’t seem to escape and a betrayal of those closest to him, they will face trials that will test them as never before.

From the shores of Cuba and the streets of New York City to the icy plains off the arctic Barents Sea, our elite force will crisscross the globe to stop an anarchist from unleashing chaos on the world’s stage…and to bring home the man who made them a family.

The Fate of the Furious is directed by F. Gary Gray (Straight Outta Compton) and features a cast that includes Vin Diesel, Dwayne Johnson, Michelle Rodriguez, Tyrese Gibson, Ludacris, Eva Mendes, Elsa Pataky, Lucas Black, Nathalie Emmanuel, Kurt Russell, Kristofer Hivju, Scott Eastwood, Helen Mirren and Charlize Theron.
