Next month will mark the 40th anniversary of the iconic The Transformers: The Movie, the first feature film of the franchise and one that forever changed the face of it, and Hasbro has revealed a new trailer for the film’s Apology Tour with an exciting new update.
The film’s re-release for the milestone anniversary will roll out September 17th in the United Kingdom, Ireland, Canada, Australia, New Zealand, Mexico, Germany and the U.S. with more international markets to be announced in the coming weeks. When it does release in theatres, fans will be treated to a brand new scene after the credits that teases the fate of Optimus Prime in a seemingly different manner than G1 Transformers fans will recognize.
The Transformers: The Movie was released between the second and third seasons of the original G1 series and stirred quite the controversy over its decision to kill off many of the original characters, including Optimus Prime in one of the most tragic deaths ever seen for a children’s hero. It caused Hasbro to be bombarded with mail from parents and fans expressing their anger over Prime’s death. Optimus Prime’s voice actor Peter Cullen has even said he didn’t realize how popular the Autobot leader was until after he died in the movie.
Hasbro quickly reversed their decision in the third season of Transformers by eventually resurrecting Optimus in the two-parter ‘The Return of Optimus Prime’. Ever since, it has become a tradition for Transformers series and films to kill off Optimus with the shortest amount of time he’s been deceased being close to 30 seconds.
