The Week in Spandex – Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2, Thor: Ragnarok poster, DCEU casting rumours, Marion Cotillard on Dark Knight Rises death, Spawn update and more

December 4, 2016 by Gary Collinson

In this edition of The Week in Spandex, we look at Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2, Spider-Man: Homecoming, Thor: Ragnarok, Doctor Strange, Iron Man, The Inhumans, Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D., The Defenders, Logan, Aquaman, Birds of Prey, The Batman, Justice League, Suicide Squad, Wonder Woman, The Dark Knight Rises, Supergirl, The Flash, Arrow, DC’s Legends of Tomorrow, Gotham, The LEGO Batman Movie, Justice League Dark, Justice League Action, Spawn and more…

Director James Gunn gave Marvel fans an early Christmas present last night by unveiling the second trailer for Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2, which while it doesn’t give away much in terms of plot, is packed with exciting footage of the returning Guardians, as well as new addition Mantis (Pom Klementieff), and lots and lots of Baby Groot! If you’ve not had the chance to watch the trailer yet, or you just want to revisit it for the umpteenth time already, you can find it here, and you may also want to check out a LEGO remake of the original teaser, which you can find here…

…As we await the first trailer for Spider-Man: Homecoming (which is rumoured to be attached to Rogue One: A Star Wars Story), Marvel has been showing off some footage from the reboot at Comic Con Experience 2016 in Brazil, which featured a scene showing Spidey talking with Jon Favreau’s Happy Hogan before Robert Downey Jr.’s Tony Stark opens up a briefcase with a suit upgrade for the webslinger, complete with underarm webbing…

…Andrew Garfield has been reflecting more on his time as the wall-crawler in Sony’s The Amazing Spider-Man movies, stating that: “There’s something about being that young in that kind of machinery which I think is really dangerous. I was still young enough to struggle with the value system, I suppose, of corporate America really, it’s a corporate enterprise mostly. [Story and character was not] top of the priority list. I found that really, really tricky. I signed up to serve the story, and to serve this incredible character that I’ve been dressing as since I was three, and then it gets compromised and it breaks your heart. I got heartbroken a little bit to a certain degree…”

…The first piece of promotional artwork for next year’s Thor: Ragnarok has arrived online, which features the God of Thunder (complete with helmet and swords) and The Incredible Hulk (complete with Planet Hulk-style armor). Check out the promotional poster here…

…Marvel’s Doctor Strange overtook the first Iron Man at the box office this week as the Benedict Cumberbatch-headlined superhero blockbuster pushing its global haul beyond the $600 million mark, making it Marvel’s highest-grossing single hero origin story. Meanwhile, we also got a gallery of concept artwork from the film [see here], as well as some early alternative designs for Dormammu [see here], and you may want to check out Anghus Houvouras’ latest op-ed ‘Why Doctor Strange’s Ending Gives Me Hope for Marvel Studios’, which you can read here…

…Jeff Bridges has been discussing his experience working on the original Iron Man, and how he found shooting the project while the script was incomplete: “It turned out that many times — 10, 12, 15 times — we would show up for the days work, not knowing what we were gonna shoot. All the guys in the studio are sitting there tapping their foot, looking at their watch, and we’re sitting in my trailer trying to figure out my lines… I made a little adjustment in my head. That adjustment was – Jeff, just relax, you are in a $200 million student film, have fun, just relax.” Of course, as we now know, Bridges was right to relax, with the resulting film proving to be a critical and commercial success, not to mention the launchpad for the highest-grossing movie franchise in history…

…Moving on to the small screen side of the MCU, and Marvel has announced that The Inhumans TV series will make its debut in IMAX cinemas with the first two episodes from September 1st 2017, kicking off a two-week theatrical run before its TV debut on September 26th. The current plan is to air the first season on “consecutive Tuesdays”, where it would presumably join Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D., assuming that show gets a season five renewal…

…And speaking of Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D., you can read Danny Hale’s review of this past Tuesday’s episode ‘Deals With Our Devils’ here, and take a look at a promo and clip for this week’s midseason finale ‘The Laws of Inferno Dynamics’ here and here…

…Although she’s giving nothing away on in terms of details, Sigourney Weaver has spoken briefly about her experience working on Netflix’s Marvel team-up The Defenders, stating that: “I can’t say much, because they might kill me. I think everyone I work for might kill me if I tell you anything. But I have the most delicious character. She’s really smart, and she’s very in charge…”

…The official Instagram account for Logan continues to tease Hugh Jackman’s final Wolverine appearance with a selection of new images, which you can see here and here…

…Click below to continue on for Aquaman, Birds of Prey, The Batman, Justice League, Suicide Squad, Wonder Woman, The Dark Knight Rises, Supergirl, The Flash, Arrow, DC’s Legends of Tomorrow, Gotham, The LEGO Batman Movie, Justice League Dark, Justice League Action, Spawn and more…
