The Week in Spandex – Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 confirmed, Captain Marvel finds directors, Phase Four plans teased, Joss Whedon talks Batgirl and more

April 22, 2017 by Gary Collinson

…After giving a series order to New Warriors last week, Freeform and Marvel have now announced the roster for the half-hour comedy series, with the previously announced Squirrel Girl set to be joined by Mister Immortal, Night Thrasher, Speedball, Microbe and Debrii; you can read the official character descriptions here…

…This week also gave us a look at Joe Quasada’s cast and crew poster for Netflix’s Daredevil spinoff The Punisher, which features Jon Bernthal’s Frank Castle alongside Ebon Moss-Bachrach as David Lieberman a.k.a. Micro, Paul Schulze as Rawlins, Daniel Webber as Lewis Walcott, Deborah Ann Woll as Karen Page, Amber Rose Revah as Dinah Madani, Ben Barnes as Billy Russo, Jason R. Moore as Curtis Hoyle and Michael Nathanson as Sam Stein; take a look here…

…Turning to Fox now and following the casting of Josh Brolin as Cable in Deadpool 2, the actor has posted a pre-production photo showing him in a facial cast as he prepares for his role as Nathan Summers, while Deadpool co-creator Rob Liefeld shared a piece of Brolin-inspired Cable artwork and Marvel Studios chief Kevin Feige said he had no problem with his Thanos star pulling double Marvel duty: “We don’t have anything written into our contracts about other roles that people can do. Indiana Jones and Han Solo are the same person [and] it hasn’t been a problem. And I think Thanos and Cable are two very different characters.” Meanwhile, in other Deadpool 2 news, Leslie Uggams has revealed she’ll be back as Blind Al alongside the returning Ryan Reynolds (Wade Wilson),  Brianna Hildebrand (Negasonic Teenage Warhead), Stefan Kapicic (Colossus) and Karan Soni (Dopinder)…

…It looks like we have a start date for X-Men: The New Mutants, the upcoming X-Men spinoff from director Josh Boone (The Fault in Our Stars), with principal photography reportedly set to get underway on Boston, Massachusetts on June 4th. If accurate, we should expect to finally start hearing some official casting news over the coming weeks…

…It’s been a fairly quiet week in the DCEU, although Joss Whedon did offer up a few words on his Batgirl solo movie, revealing that he’s unlikely to cast a big name actress in the lead, as well as discussing what drew him to the project: “I started getting obsessed with how a young woman could get hardcore enough to need to put on the cowl. Like, what’s her damage? She didn’t have her parents killed in an alley. Who is this person, who decides — rather than being forced to by their childhood trauma — decides to pick up this life? How intense and driven that person is … I just couldn’t stop thinking about it.” Meanwhile, Marvel’s Kevin Feige – who of course produced The Avengers and Avengers: Age of Ultron – also revealed that he’s looking forward to seeing Whedon’s take on the heroine: ““He did call a couple months ago to tell me about it. He didn’t have to call but I appreciated that he did. I think a Joss Whedon Batgirl would be awesome…”

…Diane Lane has confirmed that she will be reprising the role of Martha Kent in Justice League, while the actress also dismissed the criticism over the much-ridiculed ‘Save Martha’ scene, stating that she found it appropriate for the story: “It’s the compassion for a man who’s lost his mother. When you understand the wound, you can work better with people….”

…In another couple of bits and pieces from the DCEU, we’ve got a look at a new piece of concept art from Wonder Woman featuring a pivotal scene where Diana first reveals her iconic costume as she strides out into No Man’s Land [see here], and Prime 1 Studio unveiled a batch of promotional images for its 1/6th scale Joker collectible figure based upon Jared Leto’s appearance in Suicide Squad [see here]…

…Be sure to read Anghus Houvouras’ latest DCEU op-ed ‘Five Things I Still Like About the DC Extended Universe’, which you can find here…

…Turning to the small screen now and with Supergirl season two set to resume on Monday, we’ve got a new promo for the eighteenth episode ‘Ace Reporter’ [watch it here], along with the official synopsis for the twentieth episode ‘City of Lost Children’ [read it here]. Meanwhile, if rumours are to be believed, General Zod is heading to National City, with a report this week suggesting that Mark Gibbon is currently shooting scenes as the Kryptonian warlord…

…The Flash returns on Tuesday, we’ve got a batch of images from ‘The Once and Future Flash’ [see here], along with a synopsis for the twentieth-first episode ‘Cause and Effect’ [see here]. Meanwhile, The CW has also unveiled a synopsis for the twenty-first episode of Arrow ‘Honor Thy Fathers’ [read it here], along with a season five sizzle reel which offers up some new footage from the upcoming episodes [see here]…

…Be sure to read Rachel Bellwoar’s review of this week’s ninth episode of Powerless ‘Emergency Punch Up’ here, and check out a batch of promotional images for this week’s upcoming tenth episode ‘No Consequence Day’ here…

…Gotham is set to return to Fox this Monday with the fifteenth episode of season three, ‘How the Riddler Got His Name’, and we got a new trailer for the episode this week which teases that ‘The City Will Be Torn Apart’; watch it here…

…DC will soon have another prequel series on the air – albeit one that takes place a hundred years before the birth of its hero – as Syfy gears up to unleash Krypton from executive producer David S. Goyer (Man of Steel, Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice). The series follows Kal-El’s grandfather Seg-El, and this week saw a first trailer leaking online, although Syfy moved faster than a speeding bullet to get it taken down…

…And finally, fans of Static Shock will soon be able to get their hands on the complete second season for the first time ever on DVD, with Warner Archive announcing a home entertainment release for May 2017. Check out the cover art and details here.
