Venom writer: Spider-Man could play “a significant role” in a future Venom movie

December 12, 2018 by Gary Collinson

When Sony first announced that it would be moving ahead with an interconnected Marvel universe beginning with a Venom movie, there were conflicting comments coming out of Sony and Marvel Studios as to if and how these films would be linked to the Marvel Cinematic Universe incarnation of Spider-Man, played by Tom Holland.

While Marvel’s Kevin Feige stated on multiple occasions that there was no connection between Venom and Holland’s Spidey, Sony has been at pains to leave that door open – even reportedly demanding a PG-13 rating for the movie to avoid scuppering any potential future crossover with the family friendly MCU.

And now, with Venom having scored big at the box office and a sequel in the works for 2020, co-writer Jeff Pinker has once again fuelled speculation that we could soon see Tom Hardy’s Eddie Brock sharing the screen with Peter Parker.

“Without revealing anything that I’m not allowed to reveal, it is not impossible that in a future/upcoming Venom movie, Spider-Man will play a significant role,” Pinker told IGN.

So, is this just an attempt to build excitement for the Venom sequel, or could there be something in it? Well, for his part, Tom Holland has said that he’d “jump” at the opportunity to star alongside Hardy, but it would be very surprising if Marvel Studios agreed to tie its universe in with Sony’s given the lack of creative control it has over the latter.

That being said, the deal between Marvel and Sony reportedly covered five films – Captain America: Civil War, Spider-Man: Homecoming, Avengers: Infinity War, Avengers: Endgame and Spider-Man: Far From Home – and with that coming to an end in July of next year, Spider-Man could well be free for a Venom 2 appearance in 2020 if Sony has decided it no longer needs Marvel Studios and wants to bring the wall-crawler into its own fledgling superhero universe?

Would you like to see Spider-Man joining Venom in Sony’s Marvel universe? Or are you happy with the web-slinger where he is right now? Let us know in the comments below…

One of Marvel’s most enigmatic, complex and badass characters comes to the big screen, starring Academy Award nominated actor Tom Hardy as the lethal protector Venom.

Venom is directed by Ruben Fleischer (Zombieland) and features a cast that includes Tom Hardy, Riz Ahmed, Michelle Williams, Woody Harrelson, Jenny Slate, Reid Scott, Scott Haze, Sope Aluko and Ron Cephas Jones.
