Zack Snyder explains why he’s using Superman’s black suit in Justice League

January 10, 2021 by Gary Collinson

With only around 10% of the theatrical release reportedly containing footage shot by Zack Snyder, we’re expecting a very different Justice League when The Snyder Cut hits HBO Max in a few short months.

As we’ve seen from the teaser trailer, one of the major differences is the inclusion of Superman’s black costume – the iconic ‘Recovery Suit’ that the Man of Steel wears in the classic Death and Return of Superman comic book arc. And, speaking to Comic Book Debate recently, Snyder has revealed why he felt the black suit was appropriate for his appearance in Justice League:

“I really wanted the black suit; it made sense for me because Superman is a character notoriously who does not grow,” said Snyder. “He is like a rock and everything just smashes against him. That’s really the old way, the old Superman, whereas I felt like my Superman had to, at every step, sort of level up and learn something, and be something different, because in the end, what I had planned was that the final step for Superman [was] his real return, or his real coming into what I would consider the classic Superman. We don’t really get it in this movie, the classic Superman.”

While Josstice League attempted to present the “classic” take on Superman (albeit marred by horrendous facial CGI), it seems safe to assume that based on Snyder’s comments we won’t be getting that in his cut of Justice League, and he’ll be mostly sticking with his divisive take on the Man of Steel.

In Justice League, fueled by his restored faith in humanity and inspired by Superman’s selfless act, Bruce Wayne enlists the help of his newfound ally, Diana Prince, to face an even greater enemy. Together, Batman and Wonder Woman work quickly to find and recruit a team of metahumans to stand against this newly awakened threat. But despite the formation of this unprecedented league of heroes-Batman, Wonder Woman, Aquaman, Cyborg, and The Flash-it may already be too late to save the planet from an assault of catastrophic proportions.

Justice League is directed by Zack Snyder and features Henry Cavill as Superman, Ben Affleck as Batman, Gal Gadot as Wonder Woman, Ray Fisher as Cyborg, Jason Momoa as Aquaman, Ezra Miller as The Flash, Amy Adams as Lois Lane, Jeremy Irons as Alfred Pennyworth, Diane Lane as Martha Kent, Jesse Eisenberg as Lex Luthor, Connie Nielsen as Queen Hippolyta, Robin Wright as General Antiope, J.K. Simmons as Commissioner Gordon, Amber Heard as Mera, Ciaran Hinds as Steppenwolf, Joe Manganiello as Deathstroke, Jared Leto as The Joker and Ray Porter as Darkseid.
