Zack Snyder on Justice League’s position in the DC Multiverse and his take on Superman

July 21, 2020 by EJ Moreno

Zack Snyder’s take on the DC Extended Universe has polarized many fans, and the cinematic universe has also grown a lot since Snyder originally started it back in 2013 with Man of Steel.

However, it seems that the filmmaker is more than okay with how things have turned out for the DCEU, as he opened up about it to YouTube channel Beyond The Trailer, stating that he is aware that his version of Justice League is a bit out of sync with the rest of the continuity right now:

“The DC Cinematic Universe has branched like a tree and blossomed on its own in amazing and great ways… For me, where the movie falls, I believe it starts to represent its own path. It’s kind of separate now from where I would say the DC Cinematic Universe in continuity. I think it’s divergent in that way. I think that is a good thing. You know the power of DC, and one of its cool strengths is the Multiverse concept.”

One of the biggest takeaways from Zack Snyder’s discussion on his Multiverse-like take on these characters was a conversation about Superman. Long panned for how he approached the Man of Steel in his films, Snyder opened up about wanting to ground the character before building him back up.

“Superman is such an abstract character, in his powers and what he’s able to do. Anytime you can kind of bring him back down to Earth, he becomes a lot more relatable, and for that, he’s more interesting,” Snyder explained. “I have huge respect for his moral code, and I think his ultimate place as the top of the pyramid of the DC superhero world. In the end, he has to achieve that pinnacle.”

When asked by Grace Randolph of Beyond The Trailer if this version of Justice League will expand on his arc, he offered this: “I always felt like that was what I was doing. Now, like with the resurrection sort of theme, concept. You know, who is he now? What is he? When you touch the eternal, in the sense that coming back from the grave. How are we changed by that?”

This comment seemingly supports his statements that the Snyder Cut of Justice League will feel like a Multiverse story. Could we see something more akin to the Superman we saw in the Knightmare sequence in Batman v Superman? We’ll have to wait until next year to find out…

In Justice League, fueled by his restored faith in humanity and inspired by Superman’s selfless act, Bruce Wayne enlists the help of his newfound ally, Diana Prince, to face an even greater enemy. Together, Batman and Wonder Woman work quickly to find and recruit a team of metahumans to stand against this newly awakened threat. But despite the formation of this unprecedented league of heroes—Batman, Wonder Woman, Aquaman, Cyborg and The Flash—it may already be too late to save the planet from an assault of catastrophic proportions.

Justice League is directed by Zack Snyder and features Henry Cavill as Superman, Ben Affleck as Batman, Gal Gadot as Wonder Woman, Ray Fisher as Cyborg, Jason Momoa as Aquaman, Ezra Miller as The Flash, Amy Adams as Lois Lane, Jeremy Irons as Alfred Pennyworth, Diane Lane as Martha Kent, Jesse Eisenberg as Lex Luthor, Connie Nielsen as Queen Hippolyta and Robin Wright as General Antiope, J.K. Simmons as Commissioner Gordon, Amber Heard as Mera, Ciaran Hinds as Steppenwolf and Ray Porter as Darkseid.
