Peep Show Series 8 - Episode 2 Review

Luke Owen reviews the second episode of Peep Show series eight...

I wasn't overly kind to last week’s Peep Show. I felt that the series had started showing signs of growing stale, the characters were getting bored and the jokes were getting tired. However, based upon the feedback I received in the comments section (the one who insulted my career choice notwithstanding) seemed to really enjoy the episode so perhaps I was wrong. But with the damp fart smell of the first episode still hanging in the air, I walked into episode two with much trepidation. Could it make me change my mind?

After Jeremy’s successful stint with the therapist last week, he has decided that his new job career will be that of a life coach. To do this, he has to take a one week course at the end of which he’ll get a certificate (they have to be legit, they have a website). Meanwhile Mark is working on getting his book published by British London – a publishing agency who doesn't seem to be on the level.

It seems weird that Mark of all characters would fall for such this fairly obvious scam but his attempts to impress Dobby seem to be more than he can handle. As she is the only one who likes his book (“you think it’s going to be really boring, but then you read it and you think – hmmm, maybe not?”) and with her leaving her IT job to work for her ex-boyfriend’s business start-up, Mark needs to whatever he can to keep her in his grasps. With this in mind, perhaps this character decision would make sense – but none of this was ever addressed and I am purely speculating. It could have just been lazy writing.

Unlike last week’s episode where I only had a handful of chuckles, this week’s episode brought out some laughs that reminded me of the early days of Peep Show. Well written dialogue exchanges, funny sexual encounters and Mark’s social awkwardness made this feel like the Peep Show I used to love. However, it did make me think – haven’t I seen this all before?

A lot of moments felt recycled from earlier seasons – Jeremy having sex with a woman who is into strange taboos, Mark in a nightclub hating hipsters and even Jez’s “get rich quick” scheme all felt a bit ‘been there, done that’. Not to say that they weren't funny (Jeremy’s sex scene with his life coach tutor was a standout moment), but it backs up the argument I made last week about the show running its course. On the other hand, I do have to say that Super Hans' character change has been a real highlight (“these percentiles are looking at me funny” he says looking over Mark’s book publishing contract).

One of Peep Show’s crowning achievements in the world of comedy is the final cringy scene that has you hiding behind your hands and peeping through your fingers. This series however seems to have missed this trick as, once again, the final moments of episode two felt rushed. The episode should build towards its final cringy scene so we have to sit through every agonising moment. Scenes such as Jeremy urinating in a church or eating a beloved dog where all given time for the comedy to breath with fantastic results – it’s why there are so remembered. In this episode however, Mark’s book launch is left to little more than a couple of lines and some half decent sight gags. It should have been the episode’s money shot, but instead it was just another scene with some funny lines.

This series has been far from perfect or even great. I didn't really like episode 1 and episode 2 was sort of a mixed bag. There were some funny moments, but they all felt like rehashed funny moments. I am remaining hopeful that Peep Show will find its feet again and return to its former glory, but its recycled jokes are not going to help its cause. Sadly, episode 2 has not changed my mind on this series just yet.

  1. Really glad I came across this article, I am a Peep Show fan although the latest series just seems to be a re-hash of previous storylines. Actually thought episode 1 was better than 2 - last night's book scam was faintly believable and I hope they put the show to bed after this series.

  2. I agree wholeheartedly with this.

Such a shame a good show is going downhill, they should have ended it really.

  3. Don't agree with the review at all. I thought the first episode of Series 8 was absolutely brilliant and probably the best episode for 2 or 3 series. They went back to basics and there were so many great lines throughout. It felt like that episode would easily match anything from the first 3 or 4 series (where as I think series 6 & 7 went a little off the boil).

I wasn't as impressed with last night's episode but I still really enjoyed it and thought there were plenty of funny moments (although I also found Mark falling for the book scam a little unrealistic). So far I'd rate as follows:

    Episode 1: 9.5/10
    Episode 2: 8/10

  4. I have to mostly agree with Wiggly

If you don't like the show now that's fine but you must realise its written for a mass audience and won't appeal to everyone the entire time.....I for one found the build to a climatic cringe period to be tiresome and boring!! Not to mention completely unrealistic....something that seems contradictary for a show that revels in the ordinary and mundane of our lives...I mean you love the eating the dog episode!?! I think its totally stupid and was annoyed none of the characters found any means to dispose of the dog beforehand, like these supposedly normal characters in a bad, but unfortunate, but normal situation should or could have. You can see the canal behind jeremy by the land rover...throw the poor dog in, it sinks or drifts away..its done.

I seriously wonder about you level of understanding of the concept of the show if you find those episodes to be highlights. You seem to not get that is appeal is in the normality we are as a mass constrained to and our private inner thoughts on that that we rarely let escape....sometimes they come out, but always at the wrong place at the wrong time for comedic effect....its supposed to be understated...thats the point....its the situation we would all find ourselves in I it went a 'little' bit wrong...not parody!! I find Marks not learning to drive and the implications on Sophie it has (after Jeremy's mess and the rest) to be a far more realistic situation...ESP as it was played out over several episodes. In fact thinking about it find your assumption that each episode built to a cringe ending to be false...to me the best episodes played out over several with the main theme of each episode being secondary...the drama over Sophie's baby and the subsequent test springs to mind?

Look you are entitled to your opinion but I wonder if you get the idea of the show, if you want the ridiculous then I don't think its what this shows comedy should be about...surely it revels in the mundane lives we all have and the clever slant is how ridiculous that, is...?!?

  5. A very well argued point - thank you very much.

Just to be clear, I didn't highlight the dog eating episode as a highlight of the series as a whole, I was merely pointing out that it was cringy scenes like that the show is remembered for. I happen to think that this series has missed that particular trick.

Personally I, like you, enjoyed the more 'realistic' and 'mundane' plot lines from the earlier series. As I said last week, Mark's appeals for Dobby are no where near as funny or engaging as his pining for Sophie (a much more well rounded character). I can go back to the first series and howl with laughter - something that is sorely missing from my viewing experiences these days.

Your argument slightly falls apart however as the series has changed from what you and I originally loved about the show. From around series 5 onwards (perhaps even 4), the show had sunken into a parody that was designed to build up to that cringy final scene rather than the boring and mundane. While I am not a fan of this change, that's the direction the series went and in some cases it did work. Was it as funny as the first couple of series? Of course not. But this again reflects the argument I made last week about how the show should have ended after the first few series.

My only other comment to your argument is that, I understand that the show is written for mass appeal - but if I was to just write by that code of conduct, reviews would be pointless. I am not claiming to be all knowing, I am simply stating my opinion - just as very good reviewer should.

  6. While I do see your argument, I guess the comedy just didn't work for me in the first episode. I did chuckle don't get me wrong, but I wasn't holding my sides like I used to when watching the show.

I am glad that I'm not the only one who thought Mark falling for the book scam was out of character!

  7. This was the argument I made last week - should have taken the Space, Inbetweeners and Office approach - quit while you're ahead.

  8. I do seem to be in the minority that thought this week's was better than last weeks it seems. I don't think they'll continue after this series.

  9. It's already been signed for another series. And The Inbetweeners certainly did not quit while it was ahead.

  10. Hi,
I've read your post again a few time and your comments here and I can kinds see where you are coming from.

I suppose my only points in retort are that I agree the show has missed the boat from season 4 (at least). I think the descent into parody and a climactic ending was a bad path but I kinda seem to think they are getting away from that in the last 2 series and discovering a bit of the original form...you are right that its not season one (or 2) which were both stand out funny to me but I think its better than it has been.

I liked the end episode of season 7 a lot...we've all been there and done the party merry go round and the situations that ensued seemed believable....with the caveat that Jeremy's thing with Yoko was stupid...he needed to be more drunk to make that work but I suppose it still suited his characters narcisism.

I thought the moment when mark ragged on Dobbe at the urging of Alan and Jeff was perfect for his character and his social awkwardness in the presecnce of these tools was a great foil as to why he chased her all night and it drove the episode.

I'm not sure I agree with you about Sophie's character being well rounded...I'm not sure I get her....the first few seasons yes but then who is she?? We were introduced to her parents which offered us no insight into her character (it was mostly about her dad and mark) and then we've seen her go baby crazy for some reason (I get her wanting a baby but the knees up contraception and doing all 3 male characters seems to not be the same lady) we were also treated to her being a high flyer which never developed...job in Bristol which never developed, dope smoking/ecstasy/hanging out with 20yr old hipsters...why? She showed no signs of this in the early series....I find this less of a character development or 'rounding' and more of a distraction. Its as stupid as Mark doing smack for an episode...its dumb. Conversely the Super Hans and jeremy at the Wellness centre kinda worked though it was out of character, and the Super Hans going straight is a master stroke o this season.

Lastly I would just like to say I realise you know its for mass appeal, but I kinda disagree with you over your statement on that. Shouldn't a review be conducted based upon the show itself...its characters, its writing, its quality..its history? I'm not sure a review is an opinion...an 'opinion' is an 'opinion'.

Anyway I'm in agreement with you on a lot of this but I'm not sure yet where season 8 is going, the Gerard stuff was funny but the impact on Dobbe was silly...I hope the season has a long burn and an under currant and I hope they can get back to small little character foibles multiplying to create the situations and the characters inherent personalities contributing (in fact I hope they can rediscover and tighten these up)

  11. i love the show....
but this series has definitely lost the momentum of previous years.
maybe my expectations were just too high, as this show is probably one of the funniest sitcoms i've ever seen- but this series is just missing something.

  12. This guy is a genius, finally someone who can view things subjectively!
Thank you for seeing the truth and not just going on amazon and giving it 5
stars!! Keep up the good work.

  13. I read your review last week but didn't see this comments section, I think you're basically spot on. I thought last weeks episode was totally weak. This weeks an improvement, but just weak overall. One thing I hate from this and the last couple of seasons is the dialogue. Not only is it too perfect, in that characters aren't speaking in conversation, they're speaking the words of a carefully considered piece of writing that was months in the making. But also that these 'everyday' interactions flow effortlessly from where one character leaves off another starts, on top of having the inner monologue! The latter of which is a real problem, they've become well rehearsed voice overs and not internal thoughts, a real shame and once formally the crux of the show. Peep Show has basically lost that original mundane universe setting in which feasible real life insanity ensued. "Paedo!" "Clean shirt!" "Warm copies make everything better". The show about nothing Seinfeld style has gone, which also happened to Seinfeld when Larry David left. Also, (sorry I'm venting as I think of things!), the dog eating episode, for me, is potentially the shark jumping moment......Series 2 was a hard thing to maintain I suppose. Maybe the creators had to make it more universal to attract more viewers for TV? Viewer levels are apparently drastically low despite the shows popularity.

  14. IMO, the dog-eating episode was among the funniest episodes in the series, and also the most f*cked-up story they've ever attempted. I commend this show for not being afraid to offend. (Still haven't seen these latest episodes yet though)

  15. i agree completely, especially since they have had blimin ages to come up with some good stories!
