Godzilla director Gareth Edwards keen on a Destroy All Monsters-style sequel

July 26, 2013 by admin

The King of the Monsters made quite an impact in San Diego this past weekend as Warner Bros. gave fans in attendance their first look at footage from the upcoming Godzilla remake from director Gareth Edwards (Monsters). Despite the fact it’s still some ten months away from release, Godzilla is starting to generate some strong buzz online and talk is already starting to turn towards a potential sequel. Speaking to the press at Comic-Con, Edwards indicated that he’d be keen to expand the kaiju roster in the follow-up for a multi-creature smash ’em up…

“With the exception of the 1954 original, I would say my second favorite film is Destroy All Monsters. I just love the idea of a monster island. Having a world with these creatures in it. I find that fascinating and would like to treat that realistically. I wouldn’t want to limit it to one other foe, I think it’s more fun to – this question will come back to haunt me if we ever do a sequel – but I think multiple creatures make better movies in terms of the image of Gojira.”

Released in Japan in 1968, Destroy All Monsters was intended as Godzilla’s swansong and saw the iconic creature joined by many of Toho’s previous monsters such as Minilla, Mothra, Rodan, Gorosaurus, Anguirus, Kumonga, Manda, Baragon and Varan, along with his arch-nemsis, the three-headed monster Ghidorah.

Godzilla has been written by Frank Darabont (The Walking Dead), David Callaham (The Expendables), Max Borenstein (Seventh Son) and David S. Goyer (Man of Steel) and features a cast that includes Aaron Taylor-Johnson (Kick-Ass 2), Bryan Cranston (Breaking Bad), Elizabeth Olsen (Martha Marcy May Marlene), Juliette Binoche (The English Patient), David Strathairn (The Bourne Ultimatium), Ken Watanabe (Inception) and Akira Takarada (Gojira). The film is currently set for release on May 16th, 2014.
