Karen Gillan talks Guardians of the Galaxy role and fight scene with Zoe Saldana’s Gamora

March 12, 2014 by admin

Former Doctor Who star Karen Gillan has been at SXSW to promote the release of the upcoming horror film Ocolus, but of course with a role as the villain Nebula in Guardians of the Galaxy on the horizon, discussion soon turned to the cosmic Marvel adventure, with the actress offering up a few words about the eagerly-anticipated superhero offering during a chat with MTV.

“I always had total faith in the project, because the people who are making it are so brilliant, and have a long history of great films, so I knew it was in great hands. I just think it’s a new direction for Marvel, it’s really, really funny. It’s not taking itself seriously at all. It’s tongue in cheek. And just to see people be excited about that new tone is cool. Nebula does not find herself funny. I find her hilarious. But she can’t find herself hilarious, that’s not scary.”

Gillan then teased a smackdown between Nebula and Gamora, played by Zoe Saldana (Star Trek Into Darkness): “There’s a big girlie fight sequence, but it’s not that girlie. They made sure there weren’t any nice pirouettes or anything like that. This is the integral one for my character, because it’s not just a physical battle. Their relationship goes very deep, and there’s a huge history between them. So there’s a lot more to it than just the physical.”

Guardians of the Galaxy is set for release on August 1st, with James Gunn (Super) directing a cast that also includes Chris Pratt (Parks and Recreation) as Star-Lord, Dave Bautista (Riddick) as Drax the Destroyer, Bradley Cooper (American Hustle) as Rocket Raccoon, Vin Diesel (Fast & Furious 6) as Groot, Benicio Del Toro (Sin City) as The Collector, Lee Pace (The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey) as Ronan the Accuser, Djimon Hounsou (Blood Diamond) as Korath, John C. Reilly (Step Brothers) as Rhomman Dey, and Glenn Close (Damages) as Nova Prime Rael.
