James Cameron praises Alien: Covenant, calls it “beautiful”

August 15, 2017 by Samuel Brace

James Cameron has spoken well of Alien: Covenant, calling it a “beautiful” film.

Ridley Scott’s latest effort in the iconic Alien franchise, Alien: Covenant, hasn’t performed as well as expected with either fans or critics. It has been pretty divisive among fans of the franchise, much like its predecessor, Prometheus.

However, James Cameron, who, of course, famously directed Aliens, has commented on Covenant, speaking fondly of it for the most part.

“I thought that Alien: Covenant was a great ride. It was beautiful. I love Ridley’s films, I love his filmmaking; I love the beauty of the photography. I love the visceral sense that you’re that, that you’re present. It’s not a film that I would have made. I hope I’m not spoiling this for anybody, but I don’t like films where you invest in a character and they get destroyed at the end. So, I would not have made that film. I can’t comment on where he’s going with it, but I think he’s, obviously, trying to create a greater universe around it and more backstory with the Engineers and so on. I’ll show up to the next one, absolutely.”

Cameron makes a number of great points. The film certainly is stunning to look at even while not being everyone’s cup of tea. Whether there will be another film in the series will remain to be seen after its less than desirable box office numbers.

Ridley Scott returns to the universe he created in ALIEN with ALIEN: COVENANT, the second chapter in a prequel trilogy that began with PROMETHEUS — and connects directly to Scott’s 1979 seminal work of science fiction. Bound for a remote planet on the far side of the galaxy, the crew of the colony ship Covenant discovers what they think is an uncharted paradise, but is actually a dark, dangerous world — whose sole inhabitant is the “synthetic” David (Michael Fassbender), survivor of the doomed Prometheus expedition.

Alien: Covenant sees Ridley Scott reuniting with Prometheus star Michael Fassbender and new cast additions Katherine Waterston (Inherent Vice), Danny McBride (Eastbound & Down), Demian Bichir (A Better Life), Billy Crudup (Watchmen), Jussie Smollett (Empire), Carmen Ejogo (Selma), Amy Seimetz (Upstream Color), Benjamin Rigby (That’s Not Me), Callie Hernandez (Machete Kills), Tess Haubrich (The Wolverine) and James Franco (Why Him?).
