Charlie Cox reportedly returning as Daredevil in Marvel’s Spider-Man 3

December 9, 2020 by Gary Collinson

Although we’re yet to get any official casting news from Sony or Marvel Studios, there’s certainly lots of reports and rumours flying around about the currently-in-production Spider-Man 3.

Yesterday, the trades confirmed past reports that Sam Raimi’s Spider-Man 2 star Alfred Molina is returning to the role of Doctor Octopus, joining the previously announced Jamie Foxx as Electro – a role he portrayed in Marc Webb’s The Amazing Spider-Man 2.

This was quickly followed last night by an unconfirmed report claiming that Andrew Garfield (Spider-Man), Kirsten Dunst (Mary Jane Watson) and Emma Stone (Gwen Stacy) are all on board to return to the franchise, with Tobey Maguire (Spider-Man) also in talks (why Marvel would begin production without locking him down remains a mystery…).

However, if a new report from Murphy’s Multiverse is to be believed, it seems it’s not only the previous Spider-Man franchises which will be receiving a revival of sorts in Spider-Man 3, as Daredevil star Charlie Cox is reportedly set to reprise his Netflix role as Matt Murdock alongside Tom Holland’s web-slinger.

This isn’t the first time that Cox has been linked to Spider-Man 3; back in April he denied rumours that he was being lined up to return as the Devil of Hell’s Kitchen, and stated in May that he expects Marvel to recast the role if and when Kevin Feige and company decide to reintroduce Daredevil into the Marvel Cinematic Universe.

Should the casting prove true, Cox would be the first of Netflix’s Defenders to make the jump from Netflix’s Marvel shows to the MCU proper, although he could potentially be portraying a new version of the character similar to J.K. Simmons and J. Jonah Jameson. At this point, who knows? Let’s hope we get some official information soon…

The Untitled Spider-Man Sequel is slated for release on December 17th 2021 and sees Jon Watts (Spider-Man: Homecoming, Spider-Man: Far From Home) directing Tom Holland (Spider-Man), Benedict Cumberbatch (Doctor Strange), Zendaya (MJ), Marisa Tomei (Aunt May), Jacob Batalon (Ned Leeds), and Tony Revolori (Flash Thompson).
