HBO drops J.J. Abrams’ sci-fi series Demimonde for budgetary reasons

June 8, 2022 by Matt Rodgers

It was only last week that we’d noted how many projects J.J. Abrams has on the go at various networks, but now he doesn’t need to worry about one of them because HBO has decided not to move forward with self-penned sci-fi epic Demimonde due to budgetary reasons.

According to Deadline the decision not to move forward with Demimonde came after weeks of discussions between Abrams, his Bad Robot production company and Warner Bros. Television, the subject of which was the proposed budget for the show, reported to be in mid-$200M range. Warner Bros. and HBO wanted to reduce the costs, Bad Robot wouldn’t budge, and it has resulted in Abrams’ first solo television project since Alias being dropped.

Don’t feel too bad for him though, because as mentioned before Abrams currently has Justice League Dark, Constantine, and Madame X in the works for HBO Max, his much talked about Superman reboot for Warner Bros, and a live-action Speed Racer adaptation for Apple TV.

Demimonde was set to be an epic and intimate sci-fi fantasy drama that follows a family — consisting of a mother who works as a scientist, her husband and their young daughter — who all get into a terrible car crash. After the mother winds up in a coma, her daughter begins digging through her experiments in the basement and winds up being transported to another world amid a battle against a monstrous, oppressive force. Her father then follows her into this new world.
