8 must-read Wonder Woman stories to prep you for the film

May 13, 2017 by Ricky Church

Blood by Brian Azzarello

When DC rebooted their universe once again with the creation of The New 52, Brian Azzarello headed the new direction for the Wonder Woman title. In this first arc of Azzarello’s run, Wonder Woman has to protect a young woman from Hera’s wrath after they discover she’s pregnant with Zeus’ child. Pretty soon, all the Olympic gods are vying for control over this unborn baby.

Much like Perez’s run, Azzarello focused on her interactions with the Greek gods, showing ever-shifting allegiances and some epic battles and great art by Cliff Chiang. Wonder Woman’s depiction is slightly different from others, but still good as she unhesitatingly defends Zoe’s life. What was also strong about Blood, and the rest of Azzarello’s run, is just how separate it is from The New 52’s continuity and its many crossovers. In hindsight, this really allowed Azzarello to follow his own story.

The Hiketeia by Greg Rucka

For all members of the Justice League, they know Wonder Woman is the strongest ally they could have in a fight, but tread carefully if you ever go against her. That’s exactly what happens when Batman is seeking a young woman wanted for murder who has gone to Wonder Woman for sanctuary.

Greg Rucka writes an intriguing story about how far Wonder Woman will go to protect people, from their enemies or themselves. It also delivers an emotional story for the supposed villain Batman is hunting, making us empathize with her plight. The story also features some great artwork from J.G. Jones and has gone down as a fan-favourite story.
