The Week in Spandex – Batman, Suicide Squad, Wonder Woman, Avengers: Age of Ultron, Ant-Man, Doctor Strange, X-Men: Apocalypse, Deadpool, Gambit and more

May 30, 2015 by Gary Collinson

In this edition of The Week in Spandex, we look at Suicide Squad, Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice, Wonder Woman, Superman Lives, Justice League Mortal, Arrow, Static Shock, Gotham, Supergirl, LEGO DC Comics Super Heroes – Justice League: Attack of the Legion of Doom!, The League of Extraordinary Gentlemen, Avengers: Age of Ultron, Ant-Man, Captain America: Civil War, Doctor Strange, Guardians of the Galaxy, Daredevil, A.K.A. Jessica Jones, Hulk and the Agents of S.M.A.S.H., X-Men: Apocalypse, Deadpool, Gambit, Fantastic Four, Heroes Reborn and more…

Well, Suicide Squad just added another couple of hundred million to its box office haul, with the latest set photos from the film confirming once and for all that The Dark Knight is set to feature in next year’s DC supervillain ensemble. We’ll not get into any detail here for fear of minor spoilers, but you can check out the Bat-related set photos and video here, here, here and here., along with some set photos of Margot Robbie’s Harleen Quinzel here and some mysterious creatures spotted alongside Will Smith’s Deadshot here. Meanwhile, you might also be interested in Anghus Houvouras’ latest op-ed ‘Why We Should All Be Rooting for Suicide Squad’, which you can read here…

…Turning to Warner’s other DC release of 2016, Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice, and some more alleged concept art has surfaced featuring Gal Gadot’s Wonder Woman, while it’s been reported this week that Star Trek star Chris Pine has entered negotiations with the studio about taking on the role of Diana’s love interest Steve Trevor in the Amazon Princess’ 2017 solo movie…

…Having screened at MCM Comic-Con last weekend, the documentary The Death of Superman Lives: What Happened? is gearing up for worldwide release in July, and you can check out a clip from the film here, as well as some images – including more hilarious shots of Nicolas Cage dressed as the Man of Steel…

…It looks like Superman Lives may not be the only aborted Warner / DC project getting the documentary treatment, as filmmakers Ryan Unicomb, Aaron Cater and Steven Caldwell have announced that they’re set to delve into the story behind Justice League Mortal, an abandoned project from 2007, which would have been directed by George Miller (Mad Max: Fury Road). However, before you get too excited, the filmmakers are yet to secure the participation of anyone involved with the failed superhero ensemble, so at this point the tentatively-titled Miller’s Justice League Mortal could just as easily suffer the same fate as its subject and never make it off the ground…

…Last year we saw Harley Quinn make a brief cameo in Arrow, but it seems that any plans the producers had for the fan favorite villain were shot down by DC, with Willa Holland revealing at MCM London that: “We had big plans for Harley. But, I guess something came down from DC execs that told us to shut it down. I mean we had that tease with the pigtails and the ARGUS outfit but, we’ll never see it. We would love to Harley in Arrow but it will never happen…”

…Back in October of last year, Flickering Myth’s James Garcia reported that Jaden Smith was being lined up to join his parents Will Smith (Suicide Squad) and Jada Pinkett Smith (Gotham) in the DC universe by taking on the role of Static in Warner’s upcoming digital series Static Shock. Well, it seems Smith’s involvement may have been confirmed, with Tyler James Williams (The Walking Dead) stating at MCM London that: “It’s great to see Static Shock happening with Jaden…”

…In other DC TV news, it’s been announced that Nicholas D’Agosto’s Harvey Dent and Chris Chalk’s Lucius Fox have both been promoted to series regulars for the second season of Gotham, while a new promotional image has arrived online from Supergirl, giving us another look at Melissa Benoist suited up as Kara Zor-El…

…Warner Bros. Animated and LEGO have released the first trailer for their next animated offering LEGO DC Comics Super Heroes – Justice League: Attack of the Legion of Doom!, which you can see here along with the cover art, synopsis and images. The animated movie is set for release on August 25th, with a voice cast that includes Troy Baker (Batman), Nolan North (Superman), Josh Keaton (Green Lantern), Khary Payton (Cyborg), James Arnold Taylor (The Flash), Grey Griffin (Wonder Woman, Lois Lane), Dee Bradley Baker (Martian Manhunter, Man-Bat), Mark Hamill (The Trickster, Sinestro), John DiMaggio (Lex Luthor, Joker), Kevin Michael Richardson (Captain Cold, Gorilla Grodd, Black Manta), Tom Kenny (Penguin), Cree Summer (Cheetah) and Tony Todd (Darkseid)…

…Okay, so they’re not quite superheroes as such, but it looks like The League of Extraordinary Gentlemen are heading back to the big screen, with Fox announcing this week that it’s working on a reboot of the comic series from Alan Moore (which was music to Moore’s ears, I’m sure). No further details are available at present, except for word that John Davis (The Blacklist, Chronicle) will produce. The first League of Extraordinary Gentlemen movie was released back in 2003, with Stephen Norrington (Blade) directing, and was deemed both a critical and commercial failure, while a TV adaptation was planned back in 2013 from screenwriter Michael Green (Green Lantern), although that failed to get off the ground…

…Click below to continue on for Avengers: Age of Ultron, Ant-Man, Captain America: Civil War, Doctor Strange, Guardians of the Galaxy, Daredevil, A.K.A. Jessica Jones, Hulk and the Agents of S.M.A.S.H., X-Men: Apocalypse, Deadpool, Gambit, Fantastic Four, Heroes Reborn and more…
