Mission: Impossible – Fallout sets a franchise high $153.5 million worldwide opening

July 29, 2018 by Amie Cranswick

Coming off the back of stellar reviews [read ours here, here and here], Mission: Impossible – Fallout kicked off its box office run this weekend, with the six instalment in the Tom Cruise-headlined spy series setting a franchise high worldwide opening of $153.5 million.

Fallout – directed by Mission: Impossible – Rogue Nation helmer Christopher McQuarrie – opened in first place in North America with $61.5 million, and pulled in a further $92 million from 36 international markets. The previous franchise record was held by Mission: Impossible – Ghost Protocol, which opened with $131.5 million back in 2011.

Having arrived in just 40% of markets, and with the likes of China, France and Japan still to come, analysts are predicting that Fallout could go on to gross around $700 million during its worldwide run. If so, that would topple another of Ghost Protocol’s records, surpassing its $694.7 million haul which currently serves as a series best.
