Kevin Spacey’s new film Billionaire Boys Club opens to less than $500 at the weekend box office

August 19, 2018 by Gary Collinson

In his first feature since allegations of sexual misconduct last year which saw him fired from House of Cards and removed from Ridley Scott’s All the Money in the World, Kevin Spacey’s latest film Billionaire Boys Club has suffered a disastrous opening weekend, earning less than $500 at the domestic box office.

The film – which sees Spacey in a supporting role alongside the likes of Ansel Elgort, Taron Egerton, Jeremy Irvine, Emma Roberts, Cary Elwes, Billie Lourd, Suki Waterhouse, Bokeem Woodbine, Rosanna Arquette and Judd Nelson – has been available on VOD for a month, and opened on a handful of screens across the United States, earning just $126 on Friday and $162 on Sunday. Unsurprisingly, the film also had next to no marketing behind it.

Distributor Vertical Entertainment had previously said that it would release the film despite the involvement of Spacey, releasing a statement which read:

“We hope these distressing allegations pertaining to one person’s behavior — that were not publicly known when the film was made almost two-and-a-half years ago and from someone who has a small, supporting role in Billionaire Boys Club — does not tarnish the release of the film. In the end, we hope audiences make up their own minds as to the reprehensible allegations of one person’s past, but not at the expense of the entire cast and crew present on this film.”

Young. Handsome. And cunning. Led by their fellow preppie friend Joe Hunt, a group of wealthy boys in Los Angeles during the early 1980s establish a get rich quick scam that turns deadly.
