The Dark Tower TV series not moving forward at Amazon

January 16, 2020 by Ricky Church

Last year Amazon Studios began developing The Dark Tower TV series, the latest adaptation of Stephen King’s epic series that was to be a complete reboot from the 2017 feature film. However, the series is no longer moving forward at Amazon as Deadline has revealed that the streaming service has passed on the pilot.

Due to some of the difficulties believed in adapting The Dark Tower, Amazon decided to commission a pilot rather than a straight-to-order series like they did with The Wheel of Time and Lord of the Rings, the latter of which they have already renewed for a second season. According to Deadline, Amazon did not believe The Dark Tower pilot was on par with either of the upcoming big budget fantasy series and passed on it. Though the series will no longer be at Amazon, its production company Media Rights Capital will shop the two scripts that served as the pilot’s basis around for a potential new home.

The Dark Tower was originally planned as a prequel to the 2017 movie, but is now a full reboot with no ties to the film. Glen Mazzara (The Walking Dead) is serving as showrunner and executive producer.

The show had cast Sam Strike (Nightflyers) as Roland Deschain and Jasper Paakkonen (Vikings) as The Man in Black and would explore Roland’s origins as a Gunslinger, his first love and the first time he came into conflict with The Man in Black. Though they were the only confirmed actors in the pilot, it has been reported Jerome Flynn (Game of Thrones), Michael Rooker (Guardians of the Galaxy) and Joana Ribeiro (The Man Who Killed Don Quixote).
