Ahsoka Tano is equivalent to a Jedi Master in The Mandalorian says Dave Filoni

December 4, 2020 by Samuel Brace

Star Wars writer, director, and producer Dave Filoni says that Rosario Dawson’s Ahsoka Tano is like a Jedi Master when we see her in The Mandalorian.

Last week’s episode of The Mandalorian was the live-action debut of former Jedi Ahsoka Tano and we got to see her impressive skills on full display.

While Ahsoka never achieved the rank of Jedi Master due to her leaving the Order, according to Mandalorian director and Clone Wars showrunner Dave Filoni, she is now the equivalent of a Master.

Speaking to Vanity Fair, he said: “She is, for lack of a term, a master because she’s largely an independent at this point. I play her much more as a knowledgeable knight. A wandering samurai character is what she really is at this point. I’ve always made comparisons to her heading towards the Gandalf stage, where she is the one that has the knowledge of the world and can help others through it. I think she’s reached that point.”

Filion further detailed Ahsoka’s path and journey from young padawan to her status as a master: “We saw her basically hit the scene as a Padawan: young, and naïve, and brash, and aggressive. Then, in Rebels, she’s more of a traditional knight, trying to figure out how to fight a war. There’s a lot of hesitation around what she wants to be and who she can be and how her life’s been guided. I think that now I’ve taken that a step further. When you see this version of the character, she’s world-weary from everything that she’s experienced and lived through. She’s seen so much happen in her time.”

It is certainly true that Ahsoka has seen an awful lot over the years and her journey isn’t finished yet. We know that she reaches out through the force to Rey in Episode IX but was she actually dead like the other voices heard or was she still alive somehow? Hopefully, we will find out one day.

The Mandalorian season two sees the returning Pedro Pascal (Din Djarin), Gina Carano (Cara Dune), Carl Weathers (Greef Karga), Giancarlo Esposito (Moff Gideon) and Bill Burr (Mayfield) joined by the likes of Temuera Morrison (Star Wars: Episode II – Attack of the Clones), Katee Sackhoff (Star Wars: The Clone Wars), Timothy Olyphant (Justified), Michael Biehn (The Terminator), Rosario Dawson (Daredevil) and WWE Superstar Sasha Banks.

The Mandalorian season two airs on Fridays on Disney+.
