WandaVision showrunner talks about ‘that’ cameo from Episode 5

February 10, 2021 by Matt Rodgers

This news story contains HUGE spoilers for Episode 5 of WandaVision. Please proceed with caution as there’s no undoing of this blip should you read on regardless…

Before WandaVision drags us into the 80s with Friday’s sixth episode of the hugely enjoyable Disney+ series, showrunner Jac Schaeffer has been talking about that huge mic-drop twist at the end of episode 5.

Schaeffer was speaking to Marvel.com about the moment Wanda Maximoff answered the door to that familiar fleck of silver hair, but instead of seeing a resurrected Aaron Taylor-Johnson from the MCU timeline, jaws went through the floor with the revelation that this was the Evan Peters incarnation of Pietro Maximoff from the 20th Century Fox X-Men movies. Mind. Blown.

As pointed out by Kat Jennings’ Dr. Darcy Lewis, the sitcom world that Wanda has seemingly created as a grief coping mechanism has “recast Pietro”, and Schaeffer has been explaining why they decided to perform the casting switcheroo: “We loved the idea of [bringing him back]. And then we were like, how in the world are we going to make this make logical sense? Like, how do we justify this? Because that’s the thing, you can hatch a million great ideas, but to make them land, to make them be grounded, to make them feel organic to the larger story.”

She goes on to say that Kevin Feige was in favour of the move but “wanted to make sure there was a reason for it, that it made sense” and that Evan Peters “was always up for it”, and so he thought “how do we give him this entrance, and then enjoy that, and then make it crazy? And we had long had the idea of the trope of the brother, or the relative, or whoever comes to town and like, stirs things up with the family — that sitcom trope.”

What did you think of the recasting? Would you have preferred the emotional resonance of having Aaron Taylor-Johnson’s Quicksilver appear at the door, or are you excited at the possibilities Evan Peters appearance brings to the MCU?
