Sarah Paulson says she regrets appearing in American Horror Story: Roanoke

June 24, 2021 by Liam Waddington

One of the recurring actors and more or less the face of the long-running horror anthology series American Horror Story has revealed which season she wishes she could have skipped.

During an appearance on The Hollywood Reporter’s Awards Chatter podcast, Sarah Paulson, who has featured in eight seasons of the series (including the upcoming tenth season), has revealed her regrets about joining the cast of the sixth season, known as American Horror Story: Roanoke.

“I just [didn’t] care about this season at all,” Paulson said. “I know people will get mad at me for saying it, but for me, this was post having played Marcia and it was what I went to do right after finishing Marcia.”

“I was so underwhelmed by the whole experience because I felt like I had entered into a new place inside of myself in terms of what I thought possible, in terms of what I might be willing to see if I can do,” Paulson continued. “I felt really kind of trapped by my responsibility and my contractual obligation to do American Horror Story. As much as it’s my home and I’ve loved it always, it was the first time I felt like I wish I could have gone to Ryan and said please let me sit this one out. You know, let me out.”

American Horror Story: Roanoke followed a young couple (Lily Rabe and André Holland) who move into a seemingly perfect home built in the 18th century in the woods of North Carolina. However, it is later discovered that the building is close to the site of the legendary Lost Colony’s disappearance, and as horrific supernatural events occur at the house, the couple starts to sense something dark underneath the facade.

While Paulson may have wished she had skipped the sixth season, the fan-favourite actress is set to make her return to the horror series in the upcoming tenth season, titled American Horror Story: Double Feature, after sitting out the ninth season, known as American Horror Story: 1984.

While plot details for American Horror Story: Double Feature are still being kept under wraps, we know the cast will include American Horror Story regulars Sarah Paulson, Evan Peters, Kathy Bates, Billie Lourd, Finn Wittrock, Lily Rabe, Leslie Grossman, Adina Porter, and Angelica Ross, with Macaulay Culkin being the newest addition.
