Idris Elba to play Knuckles in Sonic the Hedgehog 2

August 10, 2021 by EJ Moreno

Knuckles is joining the Sonic the Hedgehog sequel, and one of the most popular actors of the moment is donning the white spiky gloves. Reports came out late Tuesday that Idris Elba will play Knuckles in Sonic 2, where he’ll face-off with Sonic and Tails.

In the popular video game series, Knuckles is a red Echidna. He debuted during Sonic the Hedgehog 3 in 1994, where he played an antagonist in the game. The character became a playable character in the game Sonic & Knuckles, becoming a fan-favorite in the process. He serves as the guardian of the Master Emerald, a huge gemstone that controls the Chaos Emeralds. We briefly saw some Echidna in the 2020 movie, appearing in the film’s intro. In the games, Knuckles is the last living member of his race.

Elba took to Twitter to confirm the news of his casting:

2020’s Sonic The Hedgehog went on to gross close to $320M worldwide, which came out during the early days of the pandemic. It was meant with praise from critics and audiences alike.

Jeff Fowler is returning to direct Sonic the Hedgehog 2, with a script from Pat Casey, Josh Miller, and John Whittington.  Elba is joining the already stacked cast of James Marsden, Ben Schwartz, Tika Sumpter, Natasha Rothwell, Adam Pally, Shemar Moore, and Jim Carrey.
