Russell T. Davies returning to Doctor Who as showrunner in 2023

September 24, 2021 by EJ Moreno

Russell T. Davies will return to a series he helped relaunch. Today, we’ve learned that the creator is set to join Doctor Who, once again serving as showrunner from 2023, the show’s 60th anniversary year.

“I’m beyond excited to be back on my favorite show,” said Davies. “But we’re time-traveling too fast; there’s a whole series of Jodie Whittaker’s brilliant Doctor for me to enjoy, with my friend and hero Chris Chibnall at the helm – I’m still a viewer for now.”

Davies revived Doctor Who 16 years ago, bringing the series back for a modern audience and introducing fans to the Ninth and Tenth Doctors, played by Christopher Eccleston and David Tennent. “He went on to work on Doctor Who for five years before leaving to launch A Very English Scandal and the critically-acclaimed series It’s a Sin.

Current showrunner, Chris Chibnall, had nothing but kind words for Russell T. Davies: “It’s monumentally exciting and fitting that Doctor Who’s 60th anniversary will see one of Britain’s screenwriting diamonds return hom. “Russell built the baton that is about to be handed back to him — Doctor Who, the BBC, the screen industry in Wales, and let’s be honest everyone in the whole world, have so many reasons to be Very Excited Indeed about what lies ahead.”

Before Davies makes his return, we still have a new series from Chibnall featuring outgoing Doctor Jodie Whittaker, along with three specials in 2022.
