New Line sets April 2024 release for The Lord of the Rings: The War of the Rohirrim

February 16, 2022 by Gary Collinson

It’s a pretty exciting time for fans of Tolkien’s Middle-earth. Not only do we have Amazon’s Second Age-set series The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power to look forward to this September, but we can now add another date to our calendars as New Line Cinema and Warner Bros. Animation have set an April 2024 release date for the anime movie The Lord of the Rings: The War of the Rohirrim.

Set some 250 years prior to the War of the Ring and serving as a companion piece to Jackson’s movies, the film will tell the story of Helm Hammerhand, the King of Rohan and the man responsible for the creation of the stronghold of Helm’s Deep.

The new film is being directed by Kenji Kamiyama (Blade Runner: Black Lotus, Star Wars: Visions) with Phoebe Gittins (daughter of The Lord of the Rings and The Hobbit co-writer Philippa Boyens, who is also executive producing) and Arty Papageorgiou writing the screenplay from a script by Jeffrey Addiss and Will Matthews. Blade Runner: Black Lotus producer Joseph Chou is producing the film through his anime studio Sola Entertainment.

“The Lord of the Rings films took Tolkien’s masterwork to new cinematic heights and inspired a generation,” said Warner Bros. Pictures Group chairman Toby Emmerich. “It’s a gift to be able to revisit Middle-earth with many of the same creative visionaries and the talented Kenji Kamiyama at the helm. This will be an epic portrayal unlike anything audiences have ever seen.”

The Lord of the Rings: The War of the Rohirrim will release on April 12th 2024.
