DC Films enters new era with Henry Cavill, Matt Reeves, Dwayne Johnson, and James Gunn

October 18, 2022 by EJ Moreno

DC and its film universe are in a rocky spot. While the executives are changing at Warner Bros Discovery, so are the talents in front and behind the cameras.

In a new landscape shift from the DCEU, we’ve learned a bit about the plan for the future, and it looks like an interesting upcoming slate. The Hollywood Reporter dove into all things DC with their latest piece.

They started with news that James Gunn and producer Peter Safran are in talks for a mystery movie, which will follow another season of Peacemaker. The story says Gunn could even be looking to expand his plate more and take on multiple new projects. Warner Bros Discovery seems to be all in on more Superman, so maybe Gunn will take on the Man of Steel, having previously turned down the opportunity prior to The Suicide Squad (Gunn also had an idea for a Krypto and Superman movie).

Speaking of Supes, THR also dove into Henry Cavill’s return, which we mentioned a few weeks ago. Dwayne Johnson played the role of super producer and brought Cavill back into the DCEU.

The article boldly declares that Johnson was “definitely at the center of Cavill’s return to DC.” With Black Adam approaching and Dwayne Johnson looking at his next venture, his planned Black Adam vs. Superman movie looks to be at play more than ever.

If Cavill returns for a full-time gig, the project is labelled “Man of Steel 2” with Charles Roven as a producer. The project is currently in search of writers.

Switching over to the Gotham City side of things, Matt Reeves is beginning to carve his whole universe with Batman. Reeves is not only quietly working on The Batman 2 but is developing a series spinoff focusing on Colin Farrell’s Penguin.

That’s not all of Reeves’s plans, especially regarding Batman’s rogue gallery. The Hollywood Reporter notes Reeves is in the very early development of projects based on Scarecrow, Clayface, and Professor Pyg. THR reports “all those projects are in the very early stages of gestation.”

The other random DC projects that THR noted were J.J. Abrams’ Superman film and Joker: Folie à Deux by Todd Phillips. Both projects exist outside of the main canon of the current DCEU movies, so it gives them a bit more flexibility.

They also mention a script for Wonder Woman 3 by Patty Jenkins is expected soon, along with a sequel for The Flash penned by Aquaman’s David Leslie Johnson-McGoldrick, in case the movie overcomes the odds and becomes a smash hit.

With these changes, epic returns, and fresh faces, DC could finally find its groove again. It’s been a while since fans felt that the DCEU had a game plan, so this story should come as a glimmer of hope.
