Exclusive Interview – Star Wars: The High Republic – Cataclysm author Lydia Kang

May 15, 2023 by Ricky Church

Ricky Church chats with Star Wars: The High Republic – Cataclysm author Lydia Kang…

While Star Wars series like The Mandalorian and Andor or the Jedi video game series have become incredibly popular in recent years, one project from Lucasfilm has also caught the attention of many Star Wars fans with The High Republic series that is told through through books, audio dramas and comics that takes places hundreds of years before the events of the Prequel Trilogy. We sat down with author Dr. Lydia Kang on her novel Star Wars: The High Republic – Cataclysm, the concluding story to Phase II of the The High Republic series. Watch our interview below…

Star Wars: The High Republic – Cataclysm sees the Jedi Order in a desperate mood after peace talks between two warring planets ended in violent disaster on the holy moon of Jedha, an attack orchestrated by the anti-Jedi movement The Path of the Open Hand. As various characters, from Jedis Gella Nattai, Creighton Sun, Aida Forte and even Yaddle investigate the source of the conspiracy, leading them to the Path’s planet of Dalna, the stage is being set for a conflict that could shape the future of the Republic and Jedi Order.

Our interview with Kang happened to take place on May 4th so we spoke all kinds of Star Wars with her, from working with Project Luminous and the Lucasfilm Story Group, coordinating with the other High Republic authors and how she crafted the characters and their development, including the chaotic antagonist Axel Greylark. We also chatted about how she utilized Yaddle, the only other Jedi of Yoda’s species we’ve seen in the films and shows aside from the wise Jedi and Grogu, and the Story Group’s note to have “more Yaddle” in the story.

Star Wars: The High Republic has been a very popular project for fans as it explores the era where the Republic and Jedi Order were at the height of their power and exploration of the galaxy, bringing more planets into the fold. The series has made its way into other Star Wars projects like the recently released Star Wars Jedi: Survivor video game and the upcoming Disney+ series The Acolyte. The third phase of The High Republic is set to begin this fall with the novel Star Wars: The High Republic- The Eye of Darkness by George Mann.
