Lionsgate developing modern American Psycho remake

February 25, 2024 by EJ Moreno

Can Bret Easton Ellis’ seminal novel American Psycho work in the modern age? Lionsgate is willing to find out with a new remake in the works.

Per The InSneider, the studio wants to bring the story into the new age. This sees the original novel and the iconic 2000 film moving from yuppie-filled 1980s to something more akin to modern Wall Street or, even worse, psychotic crypto bros.

Little is known about the project beyond that. Still, those familiar with American Psycho know it follows 1980s Wall Street sociopath Patrick Bateman as he trades Mergers and Acquisitions for Murders & Executions.

Mary Harron’s 2000 film became a staple for 2000 horror pop culture and launched star Christian Bale into another sphere. While both the book and movie were heavily criticized for their treatment of women and glorifcation of violence, it’s often misjudged not seeing it as a story condemning the same things.

Could the studio and potential writer/director for this find the balance in the modern age in terms of updating the story and how it could play with general audiences? Only time will tell, but Lionsgate has quite a daunting task ahead…
